JEWS FOR JUSTICE
PLANS STRATEGIES
Organizers and supporters of Detroit
Jews for Justice (DJJ) met recently for
a Shabbaton in southwest Michigan.
Led by Oak Park-based Congregation
T'chiyah's Rabbi Alana Alpert, DJJ seeks
to mobilize Jewish individuals and
institutions to work in coalition with
low-income and minority communities
in pursuit of racial and economic justice
in Metropolitan Detroit. DJJ says its 30
participants were diverse: intergenera-
tional, affiliated and not, and represent-
ing a range on the religious spectrum.
DJJ believes that as the city experi-
ences rapid growth and an influx
of Jews, young and old, urban and
suburban, the time is right for the
development of a Jewish organization
with a progressive agenda.
Its first "Festival of Rights" celebra-
tion for Chanukah 7-9 p.m. Sunday,
Dec. 6, at Red Door Digital, 7500
Oakland Ave. in Detroit will be an
opportunity to hear from community
activists about their work for equity
and sustainability on issues affecting
the city, region and state. Information:
www.detroitjewsforjustice.org . *
