ockey equipment is expensive.
Donations of it for a good
cause are a godsend.
That's why Coach Mark Weiss and
his Farmington Hills Jaguars hockey
team are holding an equipment drive
noon-2:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at
Farmington Hills Ice Arena for the
MORC Stars.
MORC is the acronym for the
Clinton Township-based Macomb-
Oakland Regional Center, which
provides services and support for indi-
viduals with disabilities and mental
illness.
The Stars are MORC's hockey
teams. About 100 players, youths and
adults, are in the volunteer-run pro-
gram. Their home rinks are Fraser
Hockeyland and the Eddie Edgar Ice
Arena in Livonia.
"We have players of all ages, abilities
and disabilities, males and females.
We don't want cost to be a barrier. We
don't want our players to have to pay
for their equipment," said program
founder and director Pete Ciavaglia.
New or gently used skates, sticks,
gloves, shin pads and elbow pads for
youths and adults can be dropped Dec.
6 in the arena lobby. Helmets, jerseys
and socks aren't needed.
Ciavaglia founded the MORC hockey
program in 2007. A member of the
1994 U.S. Olympic hockey team and
four-year collegiate player at Harvard,
he played five games with the Buffalo
Sabres in the NHL and he's best known
in the Detroit area for the six years he
played with the Detroit Vipers of the
International Hockey League.
The Jaguars will play the Stars in an
exhibition game from 12:45-2:15 p.m.
while the equipment drive is going on.
This is the fourth year the Jaguars and
Stars have joined forces for a game and
equipment collection.
"Our kids love playing this game,
and our parents love it, too:' Weiss
said. "It truly is a way to give back and

appreciate how we are blessed:'
The Jaguars are a Midget B house
team in the Little Caesars Hockey
Association that plays against teams
from across the area. The Midget level
is for players born in 1999.
Weiss is Jewish and four of his 18
players are Jewish. They are Jonah
Greenblatt, Cole Levine and Andrew
Weiss from Frankel Jewish Academy in
Farmington Hills and Josh Elias from
Bloomfield Hills High School. Student
coach Ira Brown also is from Frankel
Academy.
Greenblatt is a 2000-born player
who is competing up a division.
Eric Jackson, Greg Antilla and Duane
Lloyd are the team's assistant coaches.
Farmington Hills Ice Arena is at
35500 W. Eight Mile Road. For more
