GEORGES RESTAURANT It's Hockey N Chanu I Steve Stein Contributing Writer W ant to spend the fifth night of Chanukah with 20,000 of your closest friends? The Chabad of Greater Downtown Detroit is working with the Detroit Red Wings on a Red Wings Chanukah Night on Dec. 10 at Joe Louis Arena when the Wings take on the Montreal Canadiens. Group tickets are being sold in the upper and lower bowls. Rabbi Yisrael Pinson said Chabad will receive a small portion of the ticket sales. "There will be a mention of Chanukah Night at the game, but we haven't figured out the details yet:' he said. Chanukah Night festivities actually will begin in Campus Martius Park in Downtown Detroit before the puck is dropped at 7:30 p.m. at Joe Louis. The 26-foot-tall "Menorah in the D" in Campus Martius will be lit at 5 p.m. for the fifth night of Chanukah and there will be snacks and Chanukah food. Festivities there begin at 3 p.m. There also will be transportation to the arena for those who want it. This is the first time Chabad and Red Wings have joined together for a Jewish- themed game. "We have a good relationship with the Red Wings and Olympia Entertainment:' Pinson said. "We tried to do something like this last year, but it didn't pan out. The Red Wings contacted us and asked to do something this year, and now we have this game. We hope to make the game an annual event during Chanukah:' If Chanukah Night becomes an annual event, it will be held in 2017 in the Red Wings' new home, the $627 million Detroit Events Center. To purchase seats for the Dec. 10 game this year, go to detroitredwings. com/chabad and use the promo code CHANUKA. Those who RSVP for Chanukah Night on Chabad of Greater Downtown Detroit's Facebook event page will receive updates on activities. The Red Wings and Canadiens share a Jewish hockey connection. Former NHL defenseman Mathieu Schneider, who is Jewish, began his career in 1987 with the Canadiens and played with the Red Wings for three-plus seasons beginning in 2003. He won a Stanley Cup with the Canadiens in 1993. He was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2014 and U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame in 2015. Pinson said Chabads across the coun- try are partnering with professional sports teams for special nights.
