Columbus' The Nutcracker a grand and
family-friendly holiday-season tradition.

Birmingham plays a Small Angel. Weekend
matinees include children's activities and
ice cream and a buffet lunch is available
($11 per person); kids can meet the dancers
on stage following the performance. Nov.

ON THE SCREEN

The 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's
Nest — starring Jack Nicholson, directed

by Czech-born Milos Forman (whose
Jewish father and Protestant mother died
in Nazi concentration camps) and based on
the novel by Ken Kesey — changed how
society viewed mental-health treatment.
In honor of the film's 40th anniversary, it
will be screened at the Maple Theater in
Bloomfield Township 7 p.m. Monday, Nov.
30. Presented by Kadima, a Southfield-
based nonprofit serving individuals with
mental-health needs, the event will include
a pre-glow at 6 p.m., a discussion of the film
by Elliot Wilhelm, curator of film for the
Detroit Institute of Arts, and a conversation
about mental-health services and treat-
ments since the film's debut by psychiatrist
Dan Guyer and Kadima Clinical Director
Jean Nemenzik. $10-$18/includes pre-glow
appetizers and popcorn and soft drink dur-
ing the film. (248) 663-4343; kadimacenter.

investigative team of the Boston Globe
on their real-life struggle to expose the
decades of sex crimes in the Boston area
Catholic Church and its hierarchy's efforts
to squash the scandal. Liev Schreiber,
48, plays Marty Baron, now 60, a (Jewish)
Floridian who became Globe editor in
2001 and insisted that his staff of mostly
Boston-born, Catholic reporters find rock-
solid evidence linking Church leadership
to a cover-up. Baron's efforts were the
subject of strong Church push-back, with
more than a whiff of anti-Semitism in
their complaints.
Trumbo is about the McCarthy-era

blacklisting of top Hollywood screen-
writer Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston).
Trumbo's former Communist ties led to a
decade in which he could not receive on-
screen credit for his scripts, although he
continued to work, for much less money,
under false names. This ended in 1960
when Kirk Douglas, now 98, and director
Otto Preminger courageously hired him
to write Spartacus and Exodus, respective-
ly, and gave him screen credit. Douglas
and Preminger are prominent Trumbo
characters, as is vicious gossip columnist
Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren). Jay Roach,
58, directed. *
