can be lit up," Greenbaum says. "And
it's not just people's homes, but stores
and restaurants, too. Entire streets just
glowing with chanukiot, you really
feel the warmth of the holiday"
She came across a unique Chanukah
item common to Israelis. "Some people
here put their chanukiot in a glass box
outside their home so everyone can truly
see it:' she says. "My mom, Jill, saw this
and loved it so much she bought one and
brought it home so we can feel a little bit
of the Israeli Chanukah in Detroit:'
Farkas says, "Chanukah has changed
for me in that in America it mostly
comes as part of the 'holiday season
package. It was very obvious that
Chanukah was the Christmas parallel

that's part of living a Jewish calendar
year; you forget about non-Jewish
holidays and how they've become our
markers for calendar dates:'
Rivkin also reflects on living in a place
where Jewish holidays are paramount —
even in December.
"There are no words to describe
how beautiful and amazing this is:'
she says. "Walking down the street,
you become filled with this sense of
peoplehood and purpose. Everywhere
you look you see, feel, smell a holiday
that belongs to you and your people.
It's really such a special time.
"Sure, we do the same things like
light the menorah, eat sufganiyot, go
to our friends' Chanukah parties. But
your life becomes Chanukah during
that week here. You leave work early,
you walk the streets and feel it in the
air, you're in the land where the mira-
des happened, and it just brings it to a
new level." *
