Jonathan Radner 248-626-8261 Our Man At Syracuse 14 Mile Rd. and Franklin Rd. Berkley High grad finds a home with renowned basketball program. HOURS: Open Daily lam-6:30pm Steve Stein I Contributing Writer Weekends 8am-6:30pm onathan Radner could have backed out on his plans to join the Syracuse University basket- ball team as a preferred walk-on after he graduated this spring from Berkley High School. The Syracuse basketball program was caught up in an athletic scandal at the university that resulted March 5 in the NCAA suspending legendary coach Jim Boeheim for the first nine Atlantic Coast Conference games this season, taking away 12 scholarships over four years and vacating 108 wins earned from 2004- 2012. After the penalties were handed down, Boeheim announced he'll retire after the 2017-2018 season. Knowing all that — and the fact that he'll see little, if any, playing time for the Orange — wasn't enough to dissuade Radner from going to Syracuse. Now that the Orange's season is about to begin with a game Friday, Nov. 13, against Lehigh, Radner seems surer than ever that Syracuse is the place for him. "It's been a great experience he said. "I don't expect to play, and that's fine with me. That's not my role. I'm going to work hard in practice and support my team during games. It's amazing to be part of this program:' Going against Division I basketball talent in practice has been an eye-opener for the 5-foot-10 Radner. "It's not like high school. These guys are on a different lever he said. Even with the NCAA penalties, Syracuse is one of the most elite college basketball programs in the country. The Orange have made 28 NCAA tournament appearances in Boeheim's 39 years as coach and played in three national cham- pionship games, beating Kansas in 2003. They play in the Carrier Dome, where crowds often fill the more than 35,000- seat venue. j Radner is a 2015 Jewish News High School Athlete of the Year. He was honored at the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation's Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame induction dinner last month even though he couldn't make it. "I'm humbled and honored to win that award," he said. A four-year basketball player at Berkley and a three-time team MVP, Radner averaged 29 points per game as a junior and was the leading scorer in Oakland County. He also was a four-year tennis player for the Bears. Before he was a basketball star at Berkley, Radner was a standout on the Detroit Maccabi U14 basketball team that won a gold medal in 2011. He was on the Detroit U16 basketball team the next two years, and it won bronze and silver medals. He's scored points off the court, too. He started a food bank at Norup International School in Oak Park that raised more than $10,000 and served more than 26,000 meals and a charity that donated hundreds of athletic shoes to Detroit schoolchildren. Radner did well in the classroom while in high school, earning academic honors from Berkley and the Oakland Activities Association. One reason he chose to attend Syracuse was the university's scho- lastic offerings. He's dealt with personal tragedy in his young life. His father Rick Radner, his biggest fan, died Jan. 23, three days before his decision to attend Syracuse was made public through a newspaper story. North Farmington High School ten- nis player Griffin Mertz and Detroit Country Day School soccer player Emily Fisher also were named Jewish News High School Athletes of the Year. * Please send sports news to stevestein502004@yahoo.com. :1 116 6. 7 MO '.:rdtqlimi F EVERY GRIST Colonel Peter Nan Thanksgiving Day 8am-4pm Last Day of Season, Sunday, November 29th 110 FIE1116 ANY TIME 2030730 Dr. Craig Singer Dermatologist Certified Mohel 611) Traditional bris performed by an experienced physician • Use of Mogen Clamp • 3 step pain control protocol VISIT ME ON THE WEB! www.BrisMD.com www.MichiganCircumcision.com Cell (248) 224-3577 Home (248) 792-5666 Book Your Holiday Party !
