Rabbi Ariana
Silverman to be its
new spiritual leader.
She is the second
female rabbi to lead
Temple Beth Israel.
Rabbi
Sally Preisand, the
Silverman
first woman
ordained as a rabbi in the U.S., served
at the temple in the early 1970s.
Silverman, a 2010 graduate of the
Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute
of Religion (HUC-JIR) in New York
City, most recently was rabbi for the
Grosse Pointe Jewish Council and the
interim manager for Lifelong Learning
for the Central Conference of American
Rabbis (CCAR) in New York.
She served as assistant rabbi at
Temple Kol Ami in West Bloomfield
from 2010-2013, working to engage
young adults, staffing the Social Action
Committee and strengthening connec-
tions between the congregation and the
city of Detroit through speaking and
teaching engagements.
The rabbi is a board member of
NEXTGen Detroit, a founding co-chair
of its Women's Leadership Program
and is active with the social justice
group Detroit Jews for Justice, among
others.
