metro >> around town Leiebrating Together Hundreds join in musical Havdalah during Worldwide Shabbat Unity Project. I n conjunction with the Shabbos Project on Saturday, Oct. 24, several hundred members of the Jewish communities of West Bloomfield and the northern suburbs gathered that night to celebrate a musical Havdalah service at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield. The event, organized by Rabbi Shneur and Zeesy Silberberg of Bais Chabad in West Bloomfield, was celebrated with live music and dancing, glow sticks for the children and hot refreshments provided by Epic Kosher Catering. It drew men, women and children of all ages, representing the entire spec- trum of the Jewish community. A special feature was the raising of the Havdalah candles by Raina Eddy and Yael Keyes, who had celebrated their bat mitzvahs during the past week. Strengthening Ties A Hillel of Metro Detroit students interact with board. highlight of Hillel of Metro Detroit's fall retreat for board members was hearing how two students described the impact the six-campus HMD has had on their lives. University of Michigan-Dearborn senior David Solomon shared how HMD gave him the knowledge and confidence to become an Israel advocate. Wayne State University fourth-year student Molly Rott told how HMD helped her transition into a student leader and how it embraced her as family, especially when her father died suddenly last year. Hebrew Free Loan Executive Director David Contorer led a discussion for board members on development skill building. Michele Faudem, who has strong local roots, was introduced as HMD's new staff rabbi. "Our students give us cause and purpose to exist and serve. We're here to meet their campus needs as young Jews in a wider secular, often confrontational environment:' said board member Robert Sklar. "They're here to help us understand what it means to be a Jewish young adult on an urban/suburban campus rich in diversity, opportunity and, of course, challenge."
