Jews And Chaldeans
Temple Israel congregants go to church to learn more
about Chaldean faith, customs.
ewish congregants from Temple
Israel met Nov. 1 with Chaldean
congregants at St. Thomas
Chaldean Catholic Church in West
Bloomfield to learn about the Chaldean
people, their faith and the special holiday
of All Saints Day.
The evening began with delicious
Chaldean foods and conversation among
the 90 participants at the tables.
On each table were cards with pho-
tos of the saints in honor of All Saints
Day. Father Andrew Seba explained the
importance of Saint Thomas, who trav-
eled to India, and on the way stopped
in Iraq and brought Christianity there.
Because of this, the Indian Catholics are
the closest in their faith practices to the
Chaldeans.
Afterward, Seba talked about Detroit's
Chaldean community, which num-
bers about 120,000 and is the largest
Chaldean community outside of Iraq.
Many new immigrants settle in Warren,
Sterling Heights and Troy. There are 12
Chaldean churches, and St. Thomas has
about 3,500 families. Prayers are usually
in Aramaic, but are also translated into
Arabic and English. Temple Israel con-
gregants learned many Aramaic words
were similar to Hebrew.

Gail Katz presents Father Andrew Seba
with a tzedakah box.
Later, Seba and Rabbi Josh Bennett
held a question-and-answer session. A
Temple Israel congregant shared how
precious his relationship was with his
Chaldean colleague, and said that,
despite differences, we can all get along.
This was met with mutal agreement.
At evening's end, Gail Katz, an event
coordinator, gave Seba a tzedakah box on
behalf of the Temple Israel visitors, who
learned the Hebrew word tzedakah —
justice, righteousness — is also a word
in the Chaldean language. *
