'Pure Heart' Award
ongtime B'nai B'rith softball

his physical attributes and encouraged
others to do the same. The recipients of
the award share these qualities and ensure
that his legacy will continue to inspire

HOOPS STAR DIES
Former Central Michigan University and
Maccabi Tel Aviv basketball star Nate
Huffman, who was honored in 2010 by the
Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation, died
Oct. 15 from bladder cancer at age 40.
The 7-foot-1 Huffman played for
David Blatt, now the Cleveland Cavaliers
coach, for three years with Maccabi Tel
Aviv. The team won three Israel Premier
League championships and a European
SuproLeague title during those seasons.
Huffman was the MVP of the Premier
and Supro leagues in 2001.
The first 7-footer in Central Michigan
basketball history averaged 17.2 points
and 11 rebounds per game for the
Chippewas during the 1996-1997 sea-
son and was an All-Mid-American
Conference First Team selection.
After he retired from playing, Huffman
started a basketball camp for children in
2005, along with retired Romanian-Israel
basketball player Constantin Popa.
JEWISH BUCKEYE
There's no reason to root for the Ohio
State University football team, but there is
a reason to root for the Buckeyes' center.
Jacoby Boren is Jewish. He's the second
Jewish co-captain in Ohio State football
history, joining tight end John Frank who
went on to play for the San Francisco 49ers.
Boren is a 6-foot-2, 285-pound senior
from Pickerington, Ohio, who was a
Second Team Academic All-American
last year. His brothers Zach and Justin also
were Ohio State offensive linemen.
JEWISH KINGS
It was Jewish Pride Night on Oct. 18
when the Los Angeles Kings hosted the
Colorado Avalanche at the Staples Center
in an NHL game.
A discount ticket package included a
commemorative Kings' yarmulke. Cantor
Seth Ettinger from Wilshire Boulevard
Temple, the oldest Jewish congrega-
tion in Los Angeles, sang the National
Anthem. *
