Helps To Fund New
Israeli Blood Bank
At Tam-O-Shanter Country Club
I
TAM-O-CHANTER
n the mid-1980s, donors from Metro
Detroit helped build and equip the
current Magen David Adorn National
Blood Center in Ramat Gan. This above-
ground facility is Israel's only blood bank,
responsible for collecting, testing, storing
and distributing the nation's blood sup-
ply, including 100 percent for the Israel
Defense Forces.
Today, those seeking Israel's demise
have long-range rockets that can reach
Ramat Gan. During the war last summer,
all blood production was moved under-
ground into a cramped bomb shelter,
magnifying the need for a new facility.
The Israeli government, MDA and the
American Friends of Magen David Adorn
have planned a reinforced, air-filtered,
underground facility to ensure the
nations blood supply is safe, secure and
sufficient. An AFMDA $100 million cam-
paign for the new blood center is under
way, with almost $40 million raised so fat
At the recent Dr. John J. Mames
Chapter-Michigan Region/AFMDA
Celebration of Life Gala, Jim Danto,
president of the Marvin and Betty Danto
Family Foundation, shared their Founders
Circle investment of $1.5 million for the
new MDA National Blood Center.
"How can a country like Israel place
one of its most precious resources, its
blood supply, in jeopardy? This was the
question my sisters Joanne and Gail and
I asked ourselves — and the answer was,
of course, they can't:'
The Danto donation will sponsor the
Nucleic Acid Testing Lab.
"What makes this lab special to us is
in addition to quality and safety testing,"
Danto said, "is that MDA uses the test
results to inform blood donors of any
abnormalities detected and to encourage
treatment:'
Cari Margulis Immerman, AFMDA
Midwest regional director, said, "We are
most grateful to the Danto family and
their investment to help make this new
facility a reality. Their investment will
make a difference in the lives of millions
of Israelis for years to come' *
