Dance pro Brandon Keeler and Rabbi Rachel Shere train for the upcoming fundraiser.
November 5 •2015
o expand on her commit-
ment to raise both aware-
ness and funds for the South
Oakland Shelter (SOS), Rabbi Rachel
Shere is stepping out of her comfort zone
— and onto the dance floor.
"When I joined the board of SOS last
summer, I knew it would involve volun-
teering with clients, many meetings and
participation in their annual 5K walk/
run," said Shere, a rabbi at Adat Shalom
Synagogue in Farmington Hills. "I had
no idea, however, that within a few
months, I would be dancing the cha-cha
in front of hundreds of people at the
Townsend"
But when SOS president and CEO
Ryan Hertz asked if she would partici-
pate in the seventh annual Dancing with
the Detroit Stars fundraising event, Shere
heard herself saying, "Sure."
The Saturday, Nov. 14, benefit at the
Townsend Hotel in Birmingham is a
local takeoff on ABC-TV's Dancing with
the Stars that pairs professional dancers
with celebrities who train and compete
in ballroom dancing.
The event supports the Lathrup
Village-based SOS' programs for men,
women and children struggling with
homelessness in Oakland County.
"I couldn't find a good reason to say
no," Shere said. "Adat Shalom has long
been a host site for the South Oakland
Shelter and the week that we host clients
each year is such a meaningful experi-
ence for our community I deeply sup-
port SOS and would do anything to help
further their mission.
"That said, I certainly ran the danc-
ing thing by my husband of 17 years
first. During the initial phone call, Ryan
offered me the choice of dancing with
my husband in the competition or danc-
ing with a professional. Dan, my hus-
band, didn't miss a beat before choosing
the professional."
This is the second time Shere's dance
partner, Brandon Keeler, has participated
in the event, but the first time ever to be
dancing with a rabbi.
"Her enthusiasm is invigorating," he
said, describing dancing with Shere as
"awesome"
Choosing a song Shere said is "fun
and thematic for me to do as a rabbi;"
they will compete to Madonna's hit tune
"Like a Prayer"
HOUSING THE HOMELESS
Many community members have been
invited to dance in past years, but Hertz
said, "This is definitely the first time a
rabbi has competed"
Among SOS' programs is a year-round
rotating emergency shelter system, in
which 67 congregations of diverse reli-
gions take turns hosting homeless guests
each week, providing overnight accom-
modations, three daily meals, transpor-
tation and interaction with volunteers.
Among them are seven synagogues:
