Where every season is the
PERFECT SEASON
Retire from winter at Fox Run,
a vibrant 62-plus community in
Novi. Enjoy a weatherproof lifestyle
free from maintenance and filled with
amenities like an indoor pool, fitness center,
and restaurants.
Nothing was carried out, and two
more floods in 2014 and 2015 have
occurred. I want to create a flood
committee to bring creative solu-
tions to help our city. An example is
directly behind Trader Joe's in Royal
Oak, where a new retention basin was
just built. As a member of the city's
Environmental Advisory Board, we
are bringing in speakers to inform the
residents.
The Historic District expansion is
a hot topic. Plans have been floated
to add 500 to 800 homes to expand
the district from the original 108. I
believe residents do not need another
bureaucratic layer of restrictions
on their homes. We do an excellent
job of maintaining the "character"
throughout the "Woods!' I would do
what I could to prevent this expan-
sion.
Communication and transparency
are in need of an overhaul. Residents
should be aware of major ordinances
before, not after, they are passed. Our
City Commission seems to be fac-
ing inward on its own agenda, rather
than outward to keep the residents
informed and to seek their input. I
plan to hold monthly "coffees" to fill
the communication void.
All cities need more revenue, and
some have problems that have been
"kicked down the road" for a long
while. We are no different. I want
to create a grant-writing commit-
tee to bring needed revenue for city
projects. All expenditures need to be
examined, reviewed and verified as
necessary.
Q: How do you differ from your
opponent and how will you con-
vince voters that you are better
qualified?
Sloan: My passion is not for the
title. My passion is to be a voice for
the residents. Sometimes politicians
go along with the status quo too long
and lose sight of the residents. I am
not a politician.
I am a lifelong resident of this city,
having first moved here as a ninth
grader and graduated from Berkley
High School. I have seen this city
evolve over my lifetime, and I have
faith in the residents to do the right
thing and care for their property.
I have practiced law for more than
40 years and have owned a multi-
state retail clothing business. This
gives me the experience for this posi-
tion and the qualifications to look at
the city from all vantage points.
Q: How is your campaign going?
What are you doing to get the word
out?
Sloan: I have been walking door
to door since Memorial Day, talking
and listening to residents. I am not
just saying: "Hi, here's my brochure!'
People are spending a great deal of
time telling me their hopes and ideas.
It has been personally fulfilling and
has propelled me forward. The reac-
tions by phone, email, Facebook and
on the street are extremely positive.
In fact, it surprises me when people
recognize me as I walk the neighbor-
hoods.
Besides my walks, I have mailed
three informational postcards, and
have posted issues on my campaign
