midst a growing wave of ter-
ror sweeping Jerusalem and
Israel, Shaare Zedek Medical
Center, whose emergency teams are
already operating at the highest levels
of readiness, responded to two major
attacks Oct. 13.
On Malchei Yisrael Street in Geula,
a terrorist drove a car into a bus stop,
hitting three pedestrians and then left
the vehicle to stab his victims. In the
second incident, two terrorists board-
ed a bus in East Talpiot, also known
as Armon HaNetziv, one armed with
a gun and the other with a knife, and
shot and stabbed passengers.
The Weinstock Family Department
of Emergency Medicine on the Fanya
Gottesfeld Heller Floor — which is
Jerusalem's busiest ER — activated its
"multi-casualty" response protocol
with physicians, nurses and support

When Professor Uri Banin developed a nanocrystal that converted light to

other frequencies with minimum loss of energy, he lit the way for the next

generation of illuminated flat-panel displays and LED lighting.

That means unprecedented color quality and better visibility plus energy

savings and extended battery life.

Within minutes of the call, ambu-
lances arrived and over the next hour
eight patients were treated. Three were
very seriously wounded; one could not
be saved; the second was in surgery at
the time of this writing and the third
was being assessed. Two others were
moderately injured and the remainder
were lightly wounded and treated.
Dr. Ofer Merin, deputy director-
general at Shaare Zedek and director
of Trauma Services, was responsible
for managing the trauma response as
has been his responsibility in multiple
incidents in recent weeks.
The hospital is working closely with
all relevant rescue and government
agencies to be prepared for all possible
events or escalations in the security
situation. *
