PeerCorp mentors with staff members after Gesher Day ended

W

ith bagels and beach
balls in abundance, the
PeerCorps community
— b'nai mitzvah students, high school-
aged mentors and their families,
and PeerCorps staff — got to know
one another Sept. 27 at the Breakers
Covenant Church in Detroit, located in
the historic Temple Beth-El building
on Woodward Avenue.
The Gesher Day program was an
orientation to the service all students
will be engaging in. The church is one
of eight Detroit sites where they will
be volunteering bi-weekly through
December.
Gesher means "bridge" in Hebrew,
and the day showed how PeerCorps
acts as a bridge between people of
different ages, identities and com-
munities through meaningful shared
service.
"It was great to see the interaction
between the b'nai mitzvah `mentees'
and their older mentors" said Rachel
Fine, a PeerCorps staff member. "We
can't wait to take the energy and
excitement we saw today and keep it
going during our service to the com-
munity"
Maya Goldman, a mentor and senior
at North Farmington High School, said

Gesher Day was a fantastic start to the
cycle. "I could actually see the mentees
start to get excited about the program
and Detroit, which was really awe-
some she said.
Fine noted that PeerCorps has a
few spots left in this session for b'nai
students interested in meaningful
service projects. The next session
begins in February. For details, visit
