uthe Stein, 92, of Southfield, died
Oct. 1, 2015.
She was born in Detroit, gradu-
ated from Central High School and received
a teaching degree from Wayne State
University. She continued studying Midrash
and Jewish studies throughout her life at the
Midrasha College of Jewish Studies.
Mrs. Stein was a Hebrew
teacher for the United Hebrew
Schools, instructing generations
of students from 1941 to 1987.
She became the first principal
of the Troy Branch of the United
Hebrew Schools, which led to
the formation of the Troy Jewish
Congregation, now Shir Tikvah.
Upon retiring in 1987, she
became a member of the board
Ruthe Stein
of directors of the Agency for
Jewish Education. Mrs. Stein
was a member of the American
Federation of Teachers, the
Labor Zionist Organization of America,
Na'amat U.S.A., the Founders Society, the
Women's American Art and the Detroit
Institute of Arts.
She was an avid reader, loved to travel
and collected art objects from around
the world. She will be remembered as a
beautiful, strong, vibrant and independent
woman, who was smart, curious and cul-
