Dedicated Psychologist

A

nna Katz Brenner, 98, of
New York, died Sept. 21,
2015.
Mrs. Brenner went to New York on
her own to study with
Otto Fenichel and other
psychoanalysts after
supervision, analysis
and writing Transference
in Casework with Edith
and Richard Sterba in
Detroit. This followed
her graduation in the
first class at Wayne State
University's School of
Social Policy and Social Anna Katz
Work in 1944.
Anna was grandfa-
thered in as a psychologist in New
York and maintained a practice into
her late 70s. She chaired the Year of
the Child Symposium, developed
the original Check-Up for Emotional
Health and felt we should see people
through life with their deepest under-
standing of themselves.
She lived in her West End Avenue
apartment for more than 50 years.
She wanted the family to be together,
loved her mother as her best friend,
and cared deeply about Israel and
freedom for all.
Mrs. Brenner was fiercely indepen-
dent and challenged wrongs she felt
inhibited the free expression of one's
most cherished beliefs.
She had many friends who vis-
ited her in New York and have clear
remembrances of gallivanting around

the city, enjoying its beauty and cul-
ture; B'nai Jesherun, which was across
the street, once again in these past
four years became her spiritual home
through services and
the home visit of Cantor
Shoshi Rosenbaum, as
it had been for her chil-
dren growing up; Dorot,
a Jewish social service
agency on the Upper
West Side, engaged her
with help, holiday pack-
ages and a connection to
Debra Trock, RN practi-
Brenner
tioner, who became like a
daughter and was a con-
summate professional.
Mrs. Brenner is survived by her
daughters and sons-in-law, Rochelle
Anixt Gold and Robert S. Gold of
Detroit, Mira and Michael Greenwald
of California; brother, Jerome Katz;
grandchildren, Anton Israel and Gioia
B. Foa Gold, Barnet Samuel Anixt
Gold, Ilana Michelle Greenwald and
Justin Greenwald; many loving niec-
es, nephews, other family members
and friends.
She was the beloved wife of the
late Leon Anixt and the late Seymour
Brenner.
Contributions may be made to
the Anna Katz Brenner Scholarship
Fund for the School of Social Work
at Wayne State University. Interment
took place at the Machpelah
Cemetery in Ferndale. Arrangements
by Dorfman Chapel. ❑
