Fressine With Fishman
Beverly Hills Grill Redo
id you notice the
unexpected construc-
tion on Southfield
Road last month? No, they
weren't filling potholes (what
a surprise) — Bill Roberts was
giving his 28-year-old Beverly
Hills Grill a major facelift.
The restaurant closed over
Labor Day weekend, and
workers have been busy installing a
new floor, bar and windows, repaint-
ing throughout, upgrading the sound
system and handling some minor roof
repairs.
Fortunately, Roberts and his team
moved fast, reopening the spot last
week.
For me, Beverly Hills Grill is a peren-
nial favorite for breakfast meetings, in
part thanks to how diverse the morning
menu is. I love the Jumbo Lump Crab
Omelette, made with fresh mushrooms
and gouda. The Vegetable Scramble is
also a classic, blending shitake mush-
rooms, leeks, tomatoes, spinach and a
delicious garlic-herb goat cheese.
For a classic take on a California-
style omelette, check out what Bill can
do with his always-amazing chicken
apple sausage, a little avocado and
sharp cheddar.
Palladium Now Opened
Speaking of renovations, the new
Emagine Palladium in downtown
Birmingham has been a long time
coming, but the doors are now open to
reveal the end-result of a multi-million
dollar project that brings not just a new
look, but also a totally new way to see
movies.
The Palladium's second coming
made way for a full-service cocktail
bar that will also offer wine
and craft beers delivered
right to your seat. There's also the new
Ironwood Grill, a family-friendly res-
taurant promising plenty of comfort
food — think pizza, burgers and even
ribs.
Also taking advantage of the
Palladium building's overhaul is Zack
Sklar, who opened the doors last week
on his fifth restaurant, Au Cochon. This
local French restaurant comes on the
heels of his first foray into the Chicago
restaurant scene with Bernie's Lunch &
Supper, which opened in August.
The menu is Sklar's take on upscale
French cafe fare, though the 29-year-
old restaurateur says the food will
be "funky, not snooty:' thanks to an
American twist on
the major entrees.
The new space is
about 1,500 square
1 feet, with seating for
. , 100 inside and room
for 12 on the patio.
You'll be able to
watch chefs work in
Zack Sklar
Au Cochon's open-
air kitchen, itself an impressive 2,500
square feet that will be shared with a
sixth Sklar restaurant, Arthur Avenue,
set to open later this year. That menu
will feature Italian classics, inspired by
its namesake street in the Bronx.
Don't-Miss Event
You'll have a chance next week to
explore the talents of some of Metro
Detroit's best chefs during a special
five-night event at the Great Lakes
Culinary Center on Nine Mile in
Southfield to benefit the Heidelberg
Project, Oct 5-9.
Savor Detroit will feature four-course
custom menus prepared by a team of
two chefs alongside some carefully cul-
tivated wine pairings.
