U-M Sammy
Sentenced In
Vandalism

Ronelle Grier

Contributing Writer

M

atthew Vlasic, a former member of
the now-defunct Sigma Alpha Mu
(SAM) fraternity at the University
of Michigan, was sentenced to two years
probation, 100 hours of community service
and a $5,000 fine after pleading guilty to a
misdemeanor charge of destroying property
at Treetops resort in Gaylord.
The vandalism took place during a rowdy
ski weekend attended by more than 250
predominantly Jewish fraternity and sorority
members from U-M last winter.
Vlasic, who is from Bloomfield Hills, was
originally charged with a felony for malicious
destruction of property before reaching a
plea agreement with Otsego County prosecu-
tor Michael Rola. He is one of four former
SAM members facing criminal charges so far.
Former fraternity president Joshua Kaplan
of Florida and member Zachary Levin of
Ohio, who helped organize the weekend
trip, were charged with misdemeanors for
allowing minors to drink alcohol under their
supervision. The charges carry the possibility
of a maximum 30-day jail sentence and/or a
fine of $1,000.
Jesse Krumholz of New Jersey, a former
SAM member, will be sentenced Oct. 5 for a
misdemeanor charge of malicious destruc-
tion of property. Like Vlasic, he was origi-
nally charged with the felony form of the
same crime.
According to Rola, charges are pending for
a fifth former SAM member, whose name
has not been released pending arraignment.
Rola said Vlasic's $5,000 fine does not
include restitution for Treetops' $25,000
insurance deductible, which will be split
between those who are found guilty of crimi-
nal charges.
Kaplan and Levin are scheduled for trial
Oct. 23 in Otsego County. While the two
have requested bench trials - which means
the case is heard and decided by a judge
without the presence of a jury - Rola said
he reserved the right to hold a jury trial.
"The citizens of Otsego County have a
right to know exactly what these individuals
have done Rola said.
The vandalism that occurred during the
Jan. 17-18 weekend included broken ceil-
ing tiles and fixtures, splintered furniture,
stained carpeting and smashed drywall.
Treetops management, who filed a civil suit
against fraternity and sorority members.
The estimated damages are $430,000, which
includes $200,000 for repairs and $230,000
for lost revenue and attorney fees.
As a result of the incident, the national
SAM organization rescinded the charter of
the Ann Arbor chapter for a minimum of
four years.
