T

he Downtown Fox-MLZG
B'nai B'rith bowling league
is gearing up for its second
season since the two leagues merged last
year.
A recruitment party with free bowl-
ing and dinner will be held at 7:30 p.m.
Tuesday, Sept 29, at newly renovated
Drakeshire Lanes in Farmington Hills,
the Downtown Fox league's longtime
home.
The annual league meeting, which
also has free bowling, will be at 7:30
p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6. League play will
begin Oct 13 and continue each Tuesday
through Dec. 15. After a break, the
second half of the season will be Jan. 5
through April 12, again on Tuesdays.
There were 22 league teams last year
in two divisions. League President Justin
Kaplan said there's no goal for the num-
ber of teams he'd like to see in the league
this season.
"You always want to do better, of
course, but we just want to have a good
league' he said. "We have a strong per-
centage of returning bowlers, and there's
room for new bowlers.
"We feel our league is fun, but com-
petitive. Our 90 percent handicap makes
the league a good place for bowlers of all
skill levels to compete:'
The league includes a regular season
and playoffs. Each first-half division
champion earns a spot in the playoffs.
Last year's league champion — a team
made up of Rob Pliskow, Lee Weinstein,
Jim Boschan and Brian Cohen — came
from the former MLZG League.
In addition to Kaplan, the Downtown
Fox-MLZG league's board includes
treasurer Jordan Weiss; secretary Dave
Lazarus; vice president of recruitment
Greg Sobol; and vice presidents Bernie
Goodstein, Jason Batchelder, Mark
Bialick and Ray Sinai.

Golden Girls
Detroit didn't have enough players to
field a volleyball team this summer at
the JCC Maccabi Games & ArtsFest.
But Nia Kepes and Aviva Lupovitch
joined forces with girls from Ann
Arbor and Boca Raton, Fla., to win a
gold medal last month in Milwaukee.
Winning the gold was impressive, of
course. What's even more impressive
is the girls on the team never played
together until they arrived at the
Maccabi Games.
