Women In Law

Networking, noshing and knowing what it takes to succeed highlights event.

ewish Family Service of Metropolitan
Detroit, the Jewish Bar Association
of Michigan and Jewish Federation's
NEXTGen Detroit held a panel discussion and net-
working event for women in law hosted by Dykema
Gossett Detroit.
Alexis J. Schostak of Dykema Gossett served as
moderator of a panel including Laurie J. Michelson,
U.S. District Judge, Eastern District of Michigan;
Marla E. Parker, 47th District Court Judge; Laurel
Stuart-Fink, family law attorney; and Ilana Ben-
Ze'ev, partner, Honigman Miller Schwartz and
Cohn LLP and former dean of students, Wayne
State University Law School.
Each panelist shared her professional journey
and answered questions regarding issues that
included equal pay and the importance of mentor-
ing.
In addition to getting a conversation started
among women in law — the event attracted young
professionals, seasoned attorneys and one retired
judge — another goal was for those in attendance
to learn how they can get involved with JBAM,
NEXTGen and Jewish Family Service's Legal
Referral Service.
Funded in part by the Jewish Women's
Foundation of Metropolitan Detroit, JFS' Legal
Referral Service strives to match JFS clients in need
of legal assistance with attorneys available to do
pro-bono work. Those interested in volunteering
their legal services can contact Kelly Goldberg at
(248) 592-1907 or kgoldberg@jfsdetroit.org . ❑

80th Birthdays Central High Class of 1953 gathers for laughter, conversation and memories.

B

ig Tommy's Parthenon in Novi was the set-
ting for a very special brunch on Sunday,
July 19. More than 90 people, mostly class-
mates, gathered to celebrate the 80th birthdays of the
Detroit Central High School Class of 1953.
The idea for the party came from Lana Jacobs,
married to 1953 graduate Sheldon Jacobs, and a mov-
ing force behind social events beyond the usual class
reunions.
The room was alive with the sounds of greetings,
laughter and conversations, but grew quiet as the pro-
gram began. Classmates were treated to a movie of
1950s Detroit, remembered by most, followed by birth-
day cake. Seeing, talking, laughing and reminiscing
with lifelong friends made for a terrific afternoon.
