"Adam's [DeVine] character's name is Jason, and I remember thinking wouldn't it be cool to tell my friends the kid in the script is named Jason. Obviously, it went beyond that:' Pearlman, on the other hand, launched his acting career in 2010 with a leading role in the movie The Virginity Hit, a documentary-style comedy co-produced by Will Ferrell and Adam McKay. Then an aspiring comedian and actor with no Hollywood experience, Pearlman submitted an entry for a contest through the popular website Funny or Die. The contest winner would have the opportunity to audi- tion for a role in a film. Based on Pearlman's entry, he was offered the audition if he could get to New York in two days. He spent the remainder of his bar mitzvah money getting there. When the agency called him back, he says he assumed it was because he left something at the audi- tion. He returned to Michigan and heard nothing for two weeks. Around the same time, he and his father, Mark Pearlman, an OB-GYN in Ann Arbor, had an intense discussion about Pearlman's future. "It felt like a scene from a movie where my dad and I were having this argument in a parked car. My dad was saying, 'You need to figure out what you're doing with your life: It was so heated that I started crying and then, in the perfect moment, I got a phone call from California saying they wanted to fly me out for a final audition [for The Virginity Hit] Although the film received poor reviews, it launched Pearlman's career. Subsequently, while working with Martin Short on the FOX show Mulaney, Pearlman learned, through Short, that Meyers was looking for young comedi- ans for The Intern. Orley and Pearlman first met at a :' reading of the script at Tribeca Grill, a New York City restaurant part-owned by De Niro. Everyone had the part except for Orley. This would be his final audition. "I think they wanted to see if I was going to freeze up sitting around the table with all these actors because I was not an actor; Orley says. Both Orley and Pearlman say they return to Michigan as often as they can because each has family here. Pearlman says he wants to get home more to visit his 10-month-old nephew. In California, Pearlman likes to sport a "Detroit vs. Everybody" shirt because "I'm really proud to be from Michigan. I have such great memories of Detroit from when I was growing up:' Some of those memories include visit- ing his Bubbie and Zaydie in Oak Park, going to Tigers and Red Wings games and the zoo as well as some of the city's musical venues like the Magic Bag and St. Andrew's Hall. Pearlman will return home to Ann Arbor for a premiere party for The Intern, which his parents, Mark and Susan, are hosting as a fundraiser for the Kathy A. Janssen Foundation; money raised will help establish an endow- ment in breast cancer research at the University of Michigan Hospital. Orley's parents, Marcie and Rob, live in Franklin. He also is the grand- son of Doreen Hermelin and the late Ambassador David Hermelin. When Orley got the part, he and Meyers called his parents together to deliver the good news. "I am in awe of how insane this whole thing is," says a humbled Orley. "Acting was never even on my radar. Writing was part of my plan — that's why I worked for Nancy. A lot of actors would kill for this type of thing; especially seeing how hard Zack and Adam work as actors. "I still don't really know how this happened. It's all so surreal:' ❑ www.BirminghamStreetArtFair.com Common "CRAIN'S G round =est-managed c4NONPROFIT 4÷pe-aph #(0& orr 0,:s* to 4,/, ME1131121M common Ground CommonGroundHelps.org Produced in association with 734.662.3382 • TheGuild.org F With special thanks to — 1996870 www.PicklesandRyeDeli.com FOR COMPLETE HOLIDAY MENU!
