arry Binder lives by the
adage, "Sure and steady wins
the race:'
He proved it Aug. 22, when he
walked across the 5K finish line,
becoming the oldest participant of the
Crim Festival of Races in his home-
town of Flint.
Surrounded by 13 family members
and friends, the 91-year-old came in
first place in his age division.
Binder has been running since his
early 40s and began his Crim racing
career as one of 700 10-mile runners
in the second annual Crim in 1978.
The race was started by Bobby Crim,
former Michigan House Speaker, and
his assistant Lois Craig.
"It started out as a fundraiser for the
Special Olympics, and as the years pro-
gressed, the Crim [Fitness Foundation]
realized that they could attract more
people if they added more races of
varying lengths:' Binder said. "Now,
runners come from all over the world
for the Crim.
"I ran for 30 years until my knees
gave out:' he said. "The secret to life is
to keep moving. People who are seden-
tary, their life shortens by the year:'
Binder also received the "Lionheart
Award:' along with another Crim
elder-statesman.
"I got more notoriety for this than I
ever expected:' he said.
David Binder and his father, Harry
Binder, during the walk
Abbe Sherbin of West Bloomfield,
Harry's daughter, calls him "the cut-
est shrinking man on the face of the
planet:'
"My dad and I are the two gym
rats:' she said. "We firmly believe that
you can solve the world's problems
with a good pair of running shoes. We
have been doing something athletic
together all our lives until I moved
away. Our kids have such a skewed
perception of old age because my dad
goes to the gym three days a week and
golfs routinely:'
But this was the first time she
walked the Crim with him.
"This was his gig all along:' she said.
"He doesn't ask a lot of us. So when he
said, 'I'd really like everyone to partici-
pate with me this year: we all rose to
the occasion, and we heeded his call.
"He is my hero, he is so much of a
role model for all of us. He exemplifies
the importance of staying active she
said. "He's been our support system
throughout our lives, and it was our
turn to support him, and it was just
incredible:'
