Learning The Ropes
MSU senior spends time in NYC
during a Calvin Klein internship.

MSU senior from Huntington Woods, on MSU Hillel's
Birthright Israel trip this summer
W
hen and how did you know you
wanted to be in the fashion
industry? The infamous ques-
tion for all of us fashionistas. My inspiration
is the one and only Lauren Conrad. Even
though The Hills may be scripted, LC's drive
to be successful has always been something
that I strive for.
I took a different route than most. I have
always had a passion for fashion and the
communication skills of a businesswoman.
Starting in my junior year as a marketing
major in the Eli Broad College of Business
at Michigan State University, I have gained
knowledge about how different areas of
business are run and how to communicate
effectively. After a marketing internship with
the Somerset Collection in Troy, I knew that
NYC was the next step to make it in the
industry.
This summer, I had the opportunity to
intern with Calvin Klein Inc. in their public
relations department. Why not marketing?
With prior internship experience in market-
ing, along with my education, I decided to
branch out and gain experience in a sector
of marketing that is immensely crucial in the
fashion industry.
Because I was the only intern underneath
my specific manager, I had a one-on-one
experience, along with making a personal
connection. With a total of three PR interns,
I was in charge of Women's White Label,
which is everyday wear, jeans and under-
wear sold in various department stores.
What I immediately found exciting and
unique about fashion PR is dealing directly
with the products. In marketing, you are
working to sell the products, although
you are not physical holding the product.
Because Calvin Klein uses "in-house PR,"
we are directly sending samples to various
publications to be featured. White Label
deals with publications such as InStyle, ELLE,
V Magazine, Cosmopolitan, The Business of Fashion
and more.
In fashion PR, we have to constantly be
sure that our closet of sample items is up
to date for editors to pull items. Throughout
my first week, I started getting the hang
of where everything is located within our
women's White Label closet. The majority
of the samples within the department are
stored in a business-to-business software
called Fashion GPS. This software helps us
track and manage our samples, along with
other functions.
Because there are two other interns
within PR, we all work in the same office. I
loved seeing what they are doing and the
items they are in charge of. An exciting part
on my first day was seeing the dress Kendall
Jenner wore to the Tony Awards. This sum-
mer, I was also able to assist with the Calvin
Klein Underwear Press Presentation. This
gave editors the opportunity to come into
our showroom and see all of the Fall 2015
styles.
This summer was filled with the excite-
ment of exploring an amazing city and meet-
ing new people. Prior to my internship, I was
blessed to be a part of MSU Hillel's Taglit-
Birthright. My journey to Israel was the start
to an amazing summer and ending in NYC
could have not been any better.
I am eager to see where my future takes
me as a businesswoman in a fast-paced
industry. @
