Sen. Peters Supports
Obama On Iran Deal

0

n Tuesday, U.S. Sen. Gary
Peters issued a statement in
support of President Obama's
nuclear weapons deal with Iran (known
as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of
Action or JCPOA). Peters pledged to
vote against a measure that would dis-
approve of the agreement negotiated
by Secretary of State John Kerry. In
supporting the president, Peters joins
Michigan's other
Democratic U.S. sena-
tor, Debbie Stabenow.
Peters' statement
was released just
before the IN's dead-
line for this issue,
but the full text can
be found on the IN's
Gary Peters
website, www.
thejewishnews.com .
Peters said in part:
"The passage of strong sanctions,
led by the United States, were exactly
what helped bring Iran to the negotiat-
ing table. After Iran blew deadline after
deadline for reaching a deal, I joined
an effort to put additional sanctions in
place because Iran needed to know that
the patience of the United States is not
limitless ...
"My core concern with this agreement
lies with the basic issue that has always
been before us — the enrichment of

uranium by Iran. This deal allows Iran,
under the same leadership that refers
to the United States as the Great Satan
and calls for the destruction of Israel, to
enrich uranium on its own soil ...
"... for the next 20 years, Iran's cen-
trifuge manufacturing facilities will be
under constant surveillance. For the
next 25 years, Iran's uranium mines and
mills will also be under constant surveil-
lance.
"Despite my serious reservations, I
will reluctantly vote against a motion of
disapproval because I believe that doing
so will protect the credibility of the
United States to hold Iran accountable to
adhere to every single obligation in the
JCPOA.
"But if Iran fails to meet its interna-
tional obligations under this accord, I
will support the immediate reinstate-
ment of congressional sanctions, and
I will encourage my colleagues in
Congress to do the same.
"Given the terms of this agreement,
especially after 15 years when Iran's
breakout time shrinks back to months
or even weeks, preventing an Iranian
nuclear breakout may require the use
of military force and, if necessary, I will
support doing so to ensure the United
States, Israel and the global community
never has to face the specter of a nucle-
ar-armed Iran."

weeks," Soberman says, "and getting
frustrated. It wasn't the best situation.
Then last year, I came up with a couple
of ideas: first to reduce the class to four
weeks from six in order to teach more
students, and second, to teach mothers
to work with preschoolers and kinder-
garteners. There was soon a waiting list
of mothers"
But where to teach them? It was
distracting to teach in the back of a
classroom while the teacher was giving
lessons. Soberman talked with the prin-
cipal of the school as well as parents and
committed to donating the materials for
construction of a classroom if the com-
munity would supply the labor. They
were willing.
He then raised the money for materi-
als from friends and acquaintances, with
the help of Judy Jagdfeld, a friend from
Howell, Mich., who also spends part of
the winter in San Miguel.
The structure, known as CCC
(Community and Computing
Center), designed by Michael Wolk,

opened March 12 with a celebration,
dancing and snacks. The building is now
a venue for teaching computing and
photography, community meetings and
other activities.
The building has 10 laptop computers
and tablets connected to the Internet,
five digital cameras and printers that
members of the community can also use
for a nominal fee.
Access to the Internet has opened a
new world to the rural community and
opportunities that were never before
available.
"Families had no photos to display
in their homes," Soberman says. "Now
they can print the photos taken on their
phones or the center's cameras at the
CCC. It's a little thing. But it means a lot:'
What's next for Soberman? "Another
village, another computing center next
year?" he replied with a smile.
