J-Cycle On The Roll

Historical Society's annual event takes
cyclists to Southwest Detroit.

M

ore than 225 people took to their bikes on Sunday, Aug. 16, to explore
Jewish historic roots in Southwest Detroit. Traveling in groups, partici-
pants made stops at Woodmere Cemetery, Corktown and Historic Fort
Wayne to also discover the renaissance of the area today.
The event was sponsored for the fifth year by the Jewish Historical Society of
Michigan. The event has grown each year and become a summer tradition.
At Michigan Central Station, participants learned it was the site of a unique seder
in 1919. When 40 Jewish soldiers were returning from Europe during WWI, they
were delayed in Detroit. The Jewish Welfare Board heard they would be there on the
first night of Passover and arranged to have a dining car put on a sidetrack and pro-
vided the soldiers with a complete Pesach meal.
