espite not knowing a thing
about retail or fashion ini-
tially, Mordy Babayov, 23, of
Southfield has managed to mastermind
an entire discounted designer mens-
wear domain, complete with what he
claims is the biggest men's clothing
warehouse in the state of Michigan. He
also sells on all e-commerce platforms,
his own website and at his store in Oak
Park, which opened this April.
Babayov began his business by dab-
bling on eBay. While still a student in
high school, he bought clothing off
the clearance rack at a local discount
clothing store, stored them at a friend's
house and listed them on eBay during
his lunch breaks.
"I also have relatives who are into
fashion and gave me their designer
clothes. I quickly learned about qual-
ity as I dealt with the clothes they gave
me," Babayov said.
After two years, Babayov had earned
$2,000 in profit. That summer, he
invested it all in his first wholesale mer-
chandise purchase; within a month, the
merchandise was sold and he'd almost
quadrupled his investment.
"I got very excited:' said Babayov,
who then realized he was on to some-

thing big.
He had also attempted selling elec-
tronics, but said they fall too quickly in
value.
Business expanded quickly.
"I started first in my bedroom, then I
had to move to my basement:' he said.
"Luckily, my parents are very generous.
Then when we saw how well things
were going, my father invested in my
first 5,000-square-foot warehouse. I
worked there with one employee. The
next year it grew to four employees; the
year after that to eight. Then we moved
to an 11,000-square-foot warehouse
in Oak Park and, the year after that,
we added a second level to the ware-
house. This year, we opened the store
Babayov said. Currently he has 12 full-
time employees.
The Suit Depot has approximately
15,000 suits and blazers in all sizes at
any given time. Babayov buys the over-
stock and previous season's merchan-
dise from large department stores and
then sells them for 50-80 percent off.
"We have everything that men wear
from suits, dress shirts, sports coats,
dress shoes, socks, ties, accessories,
which falls into the category of 'busi-
ness dress,' Babayov said. Sizes range
from a 34 short to well into the 60s.
