JN

or Ira S. Winer, M.D., Ph.D.,
taking care of cancer patients is
among what he loves most.
And with his dual designations as
medical doctor and doctor of philoso-
phy in cell and molecular biology, he
can take a compre-
hensive approach to
the care that he gives.
"Combining the
two disciplines allows
you to take care of the
patient with specific
clinical experience
you've gained as
Dr. Ira S.
a doctor and with
Winer
available science he
said. "That, hopefully,
helps future patients as well.
"I chose oncology because it's a field
where you can make a significant dif-
ference in people's lives. We inherit our
patients and their medical care from
beginning to end:"
Winer, assistant professor in the
Division of Gynecologic Oncology
within the Department of Oncology
at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Institute and Wayne State University
School of Medicine, combines both
medical and surgical oncology to treat
cancer.
Winer also conducts research in
gynecologic cancers, including utiliz-
ing clinical trials and undertaking
translational research — the kind that
takes research from the laboratory and
applies it directly to patient care — and
more specifically, research into ovarian
and high-risk uterine cancers.
He says the field of gynecologic can-
cers is one that lends itself to in-depth
research.
"There's a lot we don't know about
the field of gynecologic oncology. We
are working here at Karmanos to close
this gap in diagnosis, treatment and
surveillance of cancer to optimize the
care of our patients:' he said.
"Currently, my research focuses on
ovarian cancer and high-risk endome-
trial cancer and how we can harness
our basic scientific research to bring
this research into the clinical setting
to aid both today's patient as well as
tomorrow's:'
Winer recently completed a four-
year fellowship at Karmanos, where
he worked with Robert Morris, M.D.,

leader of the Gynecologic Oncology
Multidisciplinary Team at Karmanos
and WSU medical school, as well as
other members of the medical group.
He currently works at Karmanos'
main campus in midtown Detroit and is
accepting new patients.
Winer received his medical training
at the University of Michigan as well as
his Ph.D. He also completed a four-year
residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology
at the University of Michigan prior to
completing his fellowship at Karmanos.
He said he ultimately chose to stay
at Karmanos because of his fellow
team members, including Drs. Morris,
Leigh Solomon and Shelly Seward, and
because of the resources available to
him and his patients, including access
to cutting-edge clinical trials, which are
both investigator-initiated and national
collaborative group and industry trials.
"I think all the physicians here
at Karmanos are excellent:' he said.
"Having access to a National Cancer
Institute-designated cancer center
[Karmanos being only one of two in
Michigan] is huge as this provides sig-
nificant clinical and research resources
for both physicians and patients.
Ultimately, a major reason I joined the
gynecologic oncology group here was
because of the caliber of both the indi-
viduals who work here and the institu-
tion:"
Winer said he considers all aspects of
the patient experience when he inter-
acts with those who seek his care.
"It's a journey for both the oncologist
and the patient:' he said.
"The care that I provide is all-
encompassing. It's not only taking care
of the patient medically, but also caring
for the patient emotionally and psy-
chologically. It's managing fear and the
unknown. It's very personal:'
Winer is a member of the American
Medical Association, the Society of
Gynecologic Oncology, the American
Society of Cancer Oncologists and the
American Congress of Obstetricians
and Gynecologists.
He resides in Oak Park with his wife
and three children. He is a member of
Young Israel and is an active member of
the synagogue board.
