Special to the Jewish News

t's not every day you get to share the

spotlight on stage with a Broadway
superstar, but Noah Eisenberg, 16,
of Bloomfield Hills can cross that off his
bucket list.
Eisenberg and a few friends were
among the crowd
for an Aug. 22 per-
formance by Idina
Menzel at the his-
toric Fox Theatre in
Downtown Detroit
when, midway
through the show,
Menzel asked for
!dine Menzel
volunteers to help her
sing the duet "Take
Me or Leave Me" from the hit show
Rent.
Eisenberg, an aspiring actor who
family members describe as an "ency-
clopedia of musical theater knowledge
raised his hand and was randomly
selected to join Menzel onstage. What
happened next surprised Menzel and
resulted in a standing ovation from the
audience.
"She asked if I knew all the words,
and I said, `Yes,"' Eisenberg said. "When
I got up on stage, I just looked out at the
mezzanine and thought — 'Wow, there
are so many people!"'
The teen belted out a single verse of
the song and Menzel motioned for him
to keep going. The more he sang, the
more the crowd cheered. The star was
visibly impressed and, as she hugged
Noah before he walked off stage, she
whispered to him, "You have a great
voice:'
A friend recorded the performance,
which Noah's stunned mother, Nicole,
posted on social media the following
day. She and her husband had planned
to attend the concert, but decided to
join some friends for a different event at
the last minute.
"I was blown away watching him
perform with her:' Nicole said. "I could
hear the crowd's reaction and watch-
ing your child do this — knowing it's
his life's ambition — to watch that was
probably one of the most incredible
moments of my entire life:'
Noah has been pursuing singing and
acting since grade school, taking piano
lessons, voice lessons and attending

theater camp. The junior at Detroit
Country Day School in Beverly Hills
spends his summers at Stage Door
Manor, a camp in the Catskills that
Natalie Portman, Robert Downey Jr.,
Lea Michele and other famous per-
formers attended. As a young child,
Eisenberg listened to songs from Rent
on a CD while riding in the car with his
mother. He's been a fan of Menzel for
years.
"I love her:' he said. "She's one of the
greatest performers of her time because
not only does she have the voice, she
also has the charisma:'
In addition to Rent, Menzel has made
a name for herself with starring roles in
the stage shows Wicked and If/Then and,
most recently, as the voice of Elsa in
the Disney hit film Frozen. The movie's
theme song, "Let It Go:' won an Oscar
in 2014 and is considered one of the
