The Detroit Maccabi Dance Team: Haley Whelan, Melanie Taylor, Coach Linda
Taylor, Sloan Lemberg and Alex Mison.

W

e begin our coverage of the
2015 JCC Maccabi Games
& ArtsFest with a report on
the Detroit dance team that competed in
Milwaukee.
Alex Mison, Haley Whelan, Melanie
Taylor and Sloan Lemberg won a total 11
medals: six gold, four silver and one bronze.
Coach Linda Taylor said she couldn't have
been prouder of the four girls.
"Each of our dances won at least one
medal and each dancer earned at least one
gold medal," she said. "It was heartwarming
to see the girls honored for their dedication
and creativity:'
Taylor said the medals won't be her only
pleasant memory from the Maccabi Games.
"Maccabi is about more than competi-
tion:' she said. "It's the way the dancers
from opposing delegations help each other,
encourage one another, and celebrate the
accomplishments of other dancers:'
Community service, called JCC Cares, is
an important part of the Maccabi Games.
Taylor said Detroit's dancers installed
raised beds so fresh produce could be
grown for at-risk families and the elderly.
More than 1,000 Jewish teens from
across the world came to Milwaukee, which
last hosted the Maccabi Games in 1997.
About 1,000 volunteers and 300 host fami-
lies kept everything running smoothly.
Opening ceremonies were held at the
BMO Harris Bradley Center in downtown
Milwaukee, home of the NBAs Milwaukee
Bucks.
Milwaukee hosted the Games from Aug.
2-7. Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was the host
from Aug. 9-14. More coverage of Detroit's
athletes and ArtsFest participants will be
presented in the next few sports columns.

Heavy Lifting

Weightlifter extraordinaire Jeff Ellis is at
it again. The 56-year-old West Bloomfield
resident, cancer survivor and certified
public accountant won his 10th Michigan
Senior Olympics gold medal Aug. 10 with
a bench press of 310 pounds at the 2015
Summer Games.
The win was another step in the right
direction for Ellis, who began 2014 with
a Senior Olympics record-breaking 320-
pound bench press at the Winter Games

but was slowed for most
of the year by injuries
and forced breaks from
training.
Ellis won a gold
medal Feb. 9 at the 2015
Winter Games with
a bench press of 300
Jeff Ellis
pounds.
"Hopefully, I'll keep getting better with
age," said the ever-upbeat Ellis, who said
he learned his lesson last year when he was
sidelined for a month by triceps tendonitis
in his right arm.
A tendon injury in his left shoulder,
something that had bothered him on and
off for a few years, also caused a month-
long layoff from training.
"The injuries were frustrating, but if
those are the worst problems for someone
my age, that's not so bad," he said.
Ellis has experienced worse problems. He
was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2009
and underwent surgery at the Cleveland
Clinic. He returned there in April for a
checkup and tests showed he continues to
be cancer free. "Five years," he said.
Ellis competes in weightlifting in the
55-59 age group in the 198-pound division,
which has a weight range from 181-198
pounds. He weighed in at 189 pounds at
the 2015 Summer Games.
Next on his weightlifting agenda is the
2015 American Powerlifting Federation
state championships Oct. 23 in Grand
Rapids. The APF state record in bench
press for his age and weight group is 275
pounds, and Ellis plans to take aim at that
record.

Go Blue

Former University of Michigan quarterback
Alex Swieca has joined the Israel national
football team, which played its first interna-
tional game Sunday, Aug. 30, against Spain.
Swieca played with the Israeli Football
League's Jerusalem Lions during the 2011
season while he was taking a Young Judaea
Year Course and was named the league's
most valuable player.
He was eligible to be on the U-M roster
this season because he was in Israel during
his freshman year, but he chose to return to
Israel.
