Akiva Grateful For Donors'
Support For New Building
We would like to express our sincere grat-
itude to the Jewish News for highlighting
Akiva's unprecedented gifts and historic
improvements on both our academic and
facility advancements. We are extremely
fortunate to work with a publication that
shares our passion for not only preserving
Jewish education in the greater Detroit
community, but also propelling our
Jewish institutions into the 21st century.
Our journey in transforming the Akiva
educational experience has undoubtedly
become a reality through the generos-
ity of the William Davidson Foundation
Grant and the William & Audrey Farber
and family, to whom we owe a lifetime of
gratitude.
The gift of an education is a timeless
and priceless gem passed down from gen-
eration to generation. We feel humbled
for receiving these inspiring gifts and
recognize the awesome responsibility of
shaping the future for the students and
families of Akiva.
We invite the entire Detroit community
to join us on Nov. 15 at 11:30 a.m. as we
break ground on Akiva's historic new
building, 52 years in the making. Thank
you for sharing our story and support-
ing our mission. We are truly blessed to
transform the future of our children's
education and share this experience with
friends, family and the greater Jewish
Detroit community.

It's Time To End Litmus Test
At Frankel Jewish Academy
Yasher koach [go forth in strength] to
Congregation Beth Shalom and Temple
Emanu-El for merging into one religious
school called Yachad, meaning "together"
("Sharing Resources:' Aug. 20, page 24).
What a great opportunity for Jewish
children from both the Conservative and
Reform movements to study and learn
together. As Rabbi Gamer of Beth Shalom
boldly stated, "There's nothing wrong
with teaching multiple views about how to
observe tradition:'
As alumni of the Frankel Jewish
Academy (FJA), we welcome this pluralis-
tic approach to Judaism.
We hope our new Head of School Rabbi
Cohen will follow Beth Shalom's and
Temple Emanu-El's example and bring an
end to our school's current discriminatory
policy providing that Jews who are not
"shomer observant" are automatically inel-
igible to teach a Bible or rabbinics class, or
even lead a minyan.
As this school year starts, it is time for
FJA to change its offensive "who is a Jew"
hiring policy and simply hire the best-
qualified Jewish educators regardless of
their denominational affiliations.
