politicians at rallies. With a straight face,
they ask for our money with the promise
that we'll walk away better off than when
we arrived. But in the end, we often leave
empty-handed. Politicians make promises
they can't keep just to get elected, and the
barkers convince you that you can suc-
cessfully make a basketball fall through a
rim that is an inch smaller than the ball.
Hmmmm, come to think of it, no
wonder the Iowa State Fair is such a big
draw for our presidential candidates. The
campaigns and the fairs have so much in
common. They both include a number
of clowns, there's plenty of pork to go
around (either in the form of speeches or
pig races), and both the candidates and
the animals leave plenty of you-know-
what behind. So watch your step, and I'll
see you back here next month. ❑

Dear Barb, Part 1
With school
beginning soon, I
would like to
improve the se-
lections from last
year, of what my
children ate. Can you recommend
some healthy choices for the kids?
Thank you from a concerned mom.

Dear Concerned Mom,

The Consequences of a low nutrient diet is
that kids can get sick and show behavior
problems
• Junk food that is processed, sugary des-
serts, and many foods kids eat can have
appetite stimulating additives.
• Many Empty foods are missing natu-
rally occurring nutrients
• Unfortunately processed foods are
quick and easy answers to meal prepa-
ration. However, your kids are missing
vitamins and minerals. These are
replaced by chemical versions that the
body does not recognize.
• According to reports, white flour that
is processed and milled may destroy
in bread products the following: 40%
of chromium, 86% manganese, 89%
cobalt, 68% copper, 78% zinc, 48%
molybdenum. White flour may be
missing phosphorous, iron, thiamin,
niacin, riboflavin, and fiber. Most Vita-
min E is gone. Also what some children
may eat can be missing good oils and
amino acids.
There are a lot of fillers in food. Raw
foods are living, and are designed for
human digestion and absorption. Fresh
fruits and vegetables have living enzymes.
Examples are raw nuts, seeds, grains.
Processed foods have living enzymes lost
in processing and no enzymes means im-
balance and weak systems. Foods over-
cooked, flame grilled or soggy vegetables,
are not always healthy.
Examples: A lot of processed foods or
junk foods: a large order of French fries
25 grams of fat; cheeseburger 46 grams
of fat= 71grams of fat and 631 calories
from fat.
Action steps: Read labels and if list is too
long, don't buy it as it probably has syn-
thetics and non food ingredients. If you
can't pronounce it, it was created in a lab
not natural. First on list is most important.
Reduce sugar, sodium, fat, caffeine, addi-
tives, junk foods, real sweet drinks.
Reduce hydrogenated and trans-fats.
Reduce artificial sweeteners.
