blacklisting, in the 1950s, of Hollywood
leftist screenwriter Dalton Trumbo, who
wasn't Jewish. Two famous real-life Jews,

the late director Otto Preminger and
Kirk Douglas, now 98, are prominent
Trumbo characters. In 1960, they helped
break the blacklist by hiring Trumbo
to write, respectively, Exodus and
Spartacus in his own name. Trumbo is
directed by Jay Roach, 58.
■ Lastly, in documentaries: In 1972,
director Sydney Pollack (Tootsie, Out of
Africa) filmed a concert and behind-the-
scenes footage of Detroit-born Aretha
Franklin, held at a Los Angeles Baptist
church. In 2007, when Pollack was ill
with terminal cancer, he asked record
producer Alan Elliott to finish the film,
which he has, out of his own pocket. The
film, Amazing Grace: A film by Sydney
Pollack, opens the documentaries. ❑
