Sportsmanship and team spirit are equally as important. Nobody exem- plified those qualities better than Jeff Fox, which is why the league's Jeff Fox Sportsmanship Award is named in his honor. Fox, who played for Temple Shir Shalom, died Dec. 22, 2011. The Sportsmanship Award has been present- ed annually since 2012 on the final day of the league's regular season. Each team submits a nominee for the award. The winner is selected at random because each team representative is wor- thy of the honor. Mitch Kline from Congregation Shir Tikvah No. 2 is the 2015 award winner. His name was announced Aug. 16 and he was presented a trophy. Each award nominee received a certificate. Howard Fershtman, Kline's manager "and a fellow Spartan:' spoke about Kline at the trophy presentation. Shir Tikvah No. 2 is a new team this year and not much was known about the players before the season, Fershtman said. Kline turned out to be "Mr. Dependable" and more. "Mitch has checked in on a regular basis to make sure we've had enough guys to play each week, which has been an ongoing issue for our team:' Fershtman said. "He's diligently tried to locate subs or come up with defensive strategies when needed:' Fershtman described Kline as "appro- priately competitive and guided by rachmones [compassion]:' He said Kline injured his knee early in the season and couldn't play, but he was at each game cheering on his teammates. Here are other Sportsmanship Award nominees: Herschal Taylor (Bais Chadad Torah Center); Steve Herty (Congregation Shaarey Zedek); Michael Rubin (Temple Beth El); Roger Lewis (Adat Shalom Synagogue No. 2); Ben Kaplan (Adat Shalom No. 1); Mark Small (Shir Tikvah No. 1); Evan Weber (Temple Israel No. 3); Victor Uzansky (Temple Israel No. 2); Jonathan Fellows (Temple Israel No. 1); Michael Bloch (Shir Shalom); Joe Freedman (Temple Kol Ami); Doug Kahan (Congregation Beth Ahm); Mike Ross (Congregation B'nai Moshe); John Marcotte (Congregation B'nai Israel); and Yoni Miodownik (Young Israel of Southfield). The end of the league's regular season means more than the Sportsmanship Award presentation and the final games before the playoffs. A league brunch is held with players and their families enjoying treats like bagels, lox, orange juice and whitefish spread. All 16 teams — the most in league history, by the way — began the playoffs Sunday, Aug. 23. After two rounds, a Final Four was determined. Semifinals and championship games will be played Sunday, Aug. 30, at Community Sports Park in West Bloomfield. There will be more league softball after that. The fall pickup league will begin in September and continue into October. Teams are chosen at random to promote camaraderie between play- ers from different temples and syna- gogues. More On Denny Here's an addition and a correction to the Aug. 13 sports column about the InterCongregational Men's Club Summer League honoring former umpire Denny Brenner on Aug. 2 at Drake Sports Park and Community Sports Park in West Bloomfield. Brenner died July 24 at age 82. Rob Landaw, who inherited Brenner's chief umpire role for the league after Brenner retired from the league in 2011, spoke about Brenner at Drake Park along with Steve Achtman from Temple Israel. Landaw's talk wasn't noted in the column. Achtmaris parents, the late Jack and Esther Achtman. were close friends with Brenner and his first wife, Sharon Brenner. Sharon was misidentified in the column. Maccabi Games Our coverage of Detroit athletes and coaches at the 2015 JCC Maccabi Games in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Milwaukee this month will begin next week. Each Detroit coach has been sent a questionnaire via email. The deadline for submitting information and photos is Sunday, Aug. 30. If you're a coach and haven't received the questionnaire, please send an email to the address listed at the end of the column. ❑ Please send sports news to stevestein502004@yahoo.com .
