English Help
For Travelers

W by can't the English teach
their children how to
speak?" This question, from
Professor Henry Higgins in the musi-
cal My Fair Lady, might better be asked
after a visit across the pond. There are
notable differences between English and
American English. Consider some of the
following expressions.
If you wish a snack, you will get more
immediate results with a request for a
biscuit, which is a cookie over there.
Their closest thing to our biscuit is a
scone, I guess; but let us not incur the
wrath of the
bakers out there
and their many
nuances.
Should you
need to repair a
deflated tire (flat
tyre), you will
want to look into
the boot (trunk)
for the needed
equipment. Do
not say "a flat"
unless you mean

an apartment.
When eating out, know that when you
order chips, you are going to get French
fries; if you want potato chips, you need
to request crisps.
Time for a break from your job? Then
you are going on holiday, not on vaca-
tion. When leaving, take the lift (eleva-
tor) down; cross the street looking out
for any passing lorries (trucks); get in
your car and check the level of petrol
(gasoline). Better safe than sorry. If you
are going in a caravan (trailer), all the
better. Be sure to watch out for any and
all diversions (detours) along the way.
While you are away, be sure to have
someone looking out for your post
(mail). Upon your return, look up

your friends in the local pub (bar) and
recount your adventures.
In talking about clothing, be sure not
to confuse your listeners when saying
that you wish to buy a vest unless you
mean an undershirt. If you mean what
we Yanks call a vest, then you should ask
for a waistcoat.
Should you experience a power outage,
you should have on hand a torch (flash-
light), something to open a tin of food
(can) and some entertainment to replace
the telly (television) until the power is
restored.
Well, I am going to get some sweets
(candy), catch the tube (subway) and
head off to buy some wellingtons (rain
boots). Cheerio!

Marla Kaminsky has walked the
walk. A few years ago, when she
was living in Memphis, Marla had
delivered her second child and
was pushing 200 pounds.
"I knew I needed help to lose
the weight," Marla said. "but I was
a busy mom and I needed account-
ability. I looked around and found
success with Diet Center. Some
time later, an opportunity presented
itself for my husband and Ito return
to Michigan and open a Diet Center
franchise of our own in West
Bloomfield, and we took it."
The couple approached Hebrew
Free Loan's Marvin I. Danto Small
Business Loan Program with their
business plan and requested help
with funding their new venture.
After approving an interest-free
Danto Business Loan for Diet Center,
Hebrew Free Loan Board members
were present to support Marla at
her ribbon-cutting in January.
"HFL has been just wonderful,"
Marla said. "They've helped give us
confidence starting a new business
in our hometown. There was a
tremendous opportunity in front of
us, and we felt we could take this
calculated risk with their advice and
support, just as we advise and
guide our own clients. We're now
approaching the end of our first year,
and the challenge has been worth it.
"HFL helped us so we can help
others to be well and bring their
family and friends to wellness
along with them."
