are less than 300 years old; so when you
say 15 years, it seems like a long time.
But for us in Israel, that's tomorrow. We
think of time in thousands of years.
"Later on, we had a meeting with
Netanyahu," she said. "He was talking
to us about Israel's fears and the need to
protect itself. He filtered through 1,000
years of Israeli history to talk about the
deal today"

Voices Of The District
Lawrence has had 10 town halls and
been followed by a "coalition of people
who want to tell me how to vote" she
said. "I can tell you that there are people
in Israel who are not against this deal.
In the Jewish community in Detroit,
not everyone is against the deal; and in
the African American community, not
everyone is for it"
During a visit to the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit in Bloomfield
Township, Lawrence was asked what
other members of the community were
saying about the Iran nuclear deal.
Bluntly, Lawrence said that 'African
Americans resent hearing that 'this is the
most important issue, and that this is the
most important vote,' she said. "We're
in America, and we're facing so many
challenges. Is it important? Yes! But to
relegate everything beneath this? There's
a concern about that."
In the Middle Eastern community,
particularly the Chaldean community,
she said she has spoken to people who
are for the deal, against the deal and
people who aren't taking a position at all.
"One person did say, 'Why is it that
Israel gets to promote its issues above
everything else? It's as if Israel stands up
and everybody else is supposed to bow
down because it's an Israel issue:
"Being a supporter of Israel," Lawrence
said, "I push back and tell them it is
an important issue. I wouldn't rel-
egate everything beneath it, but it is
of supreme importance because it has
ramifications for both the U.S. and Israel.
"But that's what people are saying. I
have to listen to all those voices" she
added.
The Core Of The Deal
Lawrence said she would push back
against anyone who says this deal is
about Israel.
"Yes, it is a stakeholder here" she said,
"but this is a deal to stop a nuclear Iran.
That's the core.
"I also push back against people who
say this is President Obama's agreement,"
she added. "This agreement comes from
five years of negotiations among the
P5+1 countries and the United Nations.
He just is presenting the agreement to
the U.S:"
Lawrence said she has concerns
about the deal but believes diplomacy
is the answer.
Her main concerns are about the
length of time of the agreement and the
amount of money that would be given to
the Iranian government and when.
In a statement issued Aug. 24, she
said, "All of my concerns have been
met regarding the length of the agree-
ment and the pre-existing anti-nuclear
proliferation agreement, the length of
time that it will take for Iran to access
the more than $50 billion in frozen
assets related to the sanctions, and
what may occur if the United States
of America were to vote no on the
Agreement."
Lawrence said at her IN interview,
"I'm also concerned about Iraris track
record with human rights and terrorism,
but the behavior of Iran is not part of this
deal. The sole reason of the agreement
is to prevent Iran from getting a nuclear
bomb. Other issues are on other tables.
"Iran has the ability to make a bomb
now," she added. "We have to stop them,
slow them down, regulate them"
Lawrence said President Obama's let-
ter recommitting himself to Israel, sent
to Democrats last week, made a world of
difference to her.
In that letter, Obama laid out a num-
ber of steps the U.S. will take, including
enhancing security cooperation with
Israel and Gulf allies and the continued
enforcement of sanctions placed on Iran
for its support of terrorism and human
rights violations. He also said the U.S.
will "keep all options on the table should
Iran violate the agreement"
"He addressed concerns about Israel
that I've been hearing from the Jewish
community that I wanted answered,"
Lawrence said.
In the end, Lawrence said her role is
to "listen to my constituents, research
and do my homework and then cast my
one vote'
Lawrence said she understands there
are critics of the deal who prefer the
option of war or who believe that we can
pull out of this pact and stand alone.
"However" she said in her Aug. 24
statement, "the power of collabora-
tion has brought Iran to the table. This
negotiation has proven that the United
States stands best prepared to address
the threat of Iran only when we work
collaboratively with other allies ... This
agreement is our best option for ensur-
ing that we live in a world where Iran
does not have a nuclear bomb"
The Republican-controlled Congress
has until Sept 17 to vote on a resolution
of disapproval for the agreement, which
is expected to pass the House.
If Obama can get 41 Democratic
senators to side with him, he could
block a vote from taking place in the
Senate. But if the Senate does, in fact,
vote against the Iran deal, the president
would need 34 Senate Democrats to
vote to sustain his veto.
