fter spending the first week
of August in Israel with her
fellow freshman Democrats
and the remainder of the month talk-
ing to the constituents in her district,
Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence has
declared her support for the Iran nuclear
program deal.
Lawrence represents Michigan's 14th
Congressional District, which meanders
from eastern Detroit through Oak Park,
Southfield, Farmington Hills and parts
of West Bloomfield — including a size-
able portion of the Jewish community.
She didn't come to her decision easily,
Lawrence said in an interview at the
JN's Southfield offices.
"Consideration of this issue has been
the most complex and nuanced foreign
policy decision I have had to make as a
member of Congress:' she said.

In Israel, for the first time ever, Lawrence
said, Democrat and Republican congres-
sional delegations crossed paths and

joined together briefly while touring the
country. "We feel that Israel is a nonparti-
san issue, so why can't we do it together?"
asked the congresswoman, who's been to
Israel before.
Lawrence said she is concerned that
the Iran deal and the strained relationship
between President Barack Obama and
Netanyahu are pushing Israel into becom-
ing a partisan issue.
In that sense, she said she told the
prime minister that his speech before
Congress "was a political slap in the
face to the president. He accepted that:'
Likewise, she added, "I sat in a room and
had the same conversation with President
Obama about respecting the relation-
ship with Netanyahu and about decorum
because Israel is our friend. This is not a
partisan issue.
"More than one of us told the prime
minister that we want him to work with
our president. We are like family, and
family doesn't argue in public. You're
going to have disagreements. Have them,
but come out of the room united:'
The first day in Israel, Lawrence said,
she met a professor who was talking about
the Iran deal. He said, "'You Americans
