Federation Was Justified
In Rejecting Iran Pact
This note responds to a letter last week
criticizing our Federation for urging
rejection of the president's tentative
agreement with Iran ("Federation's
Rejection of Iran Pact Does Not Speak For
All:' Aug. 13, page 5).
First, these viewpoints reflect our
country's growing uneasiness with this
agreement, as reflected in a recent Fox
poll disapproving the agreement by a
58-31 percent majority.
Second, the agreement provides $50-
$150 billion in funds to the Iranian
regime — much of it to continue harm-
ing our citizens in Iraq, Afghanistan and
elsewhere, plus to our Israeli brothers
via such Iranian proxies as Hamas and
Hezbollah.
Third, we are all unsure of the presi-
dent's "side deals" in this agreement,
including possibly having the U.S. protect
Iranian's nuclear facilities from Israeli
bombs, which is akin to Obamacare —
where we had to pass the law before we
read it.
Fourth, we could have negotiated a
much better treaty, since the current
agreement does not even allow for the
release of several U.S. citizens held in
Iranian prisons.
Fifth, we should take the Iranian lead-
ership's promises at face value of seeking
to destroy both Israel [the Little Satan]
and the Big Satan — the U.S.A.
Finally, when Hitler threatened to

destroy European Jewry, many American
Jews did nothing — contributing to the
destruction of the Six Million. Let us not
make this same mistake.

Iran's ICBM Capacity
Won't Make World Safer
The recent opinion piece ("Nuclear
Capitulation Will Lead To Iranian Bomb:'
Aug. 13, page 58)) by Drs. Eugene
Greenstein, Ph.D. and Irving Ginsberg,
Ph.D. was written by two scholars who
have impeccable credentials to discuss
this matter and was an outstanding expla-
nation of the devastating pitfalls in the
Iran Nuclear Agreement.
It is incomprehensible that the United
States would sign an agreement with a
sponsor of terror where they give away
the farm and get nothing in return —
certainly not a safer world. Security is
our single most important national asset.
Without national security, everything is at
risk, especially our way of life.
This agreement not only puts at risk
the national security of the U.S. but adds
significantly to the potential destruction
of the national security of Israel. The
"IC" in ICBM means just what it says:
"Intercontinental:' All corners of the
world need to beware. We should learn
from history and not repeat it.

ometimes, the word "hero" is
overused, but there are indeed
real heroes in the world.
For example, we certainly hear about
military heroes, the men and women
who demonstrated extraordinary cour-
age while saving a wounded comrade
or risk their lives to save the many.
Indeed, this is why so many Medals of
Honor are awarded posthumously.
Or, in civilian life, we know about the
bravery of policemen or firemen, espe-
cially, after an event like 9-11. But what
about the local heroes that don't receive
national press and adulation? Folks like
Charles Upfal?
While doing some research in the
William Davidson Digital Archive, I
ran across a story from the April 14,
1972, issue of the JN. There I learned

Southfield Man
Ifonored as Hero

A native of Poland who immi-
grated to Detroit with the amis.
t,:nce of the Jewish Resettlement
Service in 1933, was honored Mon.
day by the city of Southfield for
saving a father and son from
drowning.

about Charles Upfal, a Polish immi-
grant to Detroit in 1953 via the Jewish
Resettlement Service who survived
a Russian prison camp during World
War II.
The JN reported that Upfal received
the Royal Life Saving Society of
Canada certificate from the mayor of
Southfield. While vacationing in British
Columbia, he rescued Richard Evans
and his 6-year-old son from drowning.
It is a neat story about an "everyday"
hero. I'm sure Mr. Evans and his son
would agree.
