enny Brenner didrit throw a
pitch, hit or field a ball during
the time he was involved in the
InterCongregational Men's Club Summer
Softball League.
But he was an important part of the
league. That was made clear Sunday,
Aug. 2, when players at Community
Sports Park and Drake Sports Park in
West Bloomfield took time out to honor
their umpire who died July 24 at age 82.
Brenner, a longtime local umpire of
both baseball and softball, began working
the men's clubs' games shortly after the
league was founded in 1996 until 2011.
A poster featuring Brenner was posted
Aug. 2 at each field. One poster will
be delivered to Temple Israel in West
Bloomfield, where he belonged. The
other will go to his family.
Bradley Silber of Adat Shalom
Synagogue in Farmington Hills, one of
the league's founders and a longtime
friend of Brenner, spoke at Community
Sports Park. Here's what he said:
"When we decided it was time to
bring umpires into our league, Denny
jumped at the chance. He wanted so
badly to be part of our league because of
the way it brought the Jewish commu-
nity together.
"Denny knew many of us before we
were old enough to hold a bat, and we
felt like family to him. Although his love
for the game was strong, his love for all
of us was even stronger. Denny would
often tell me how grateful he was to be
part of a league that was built on friend-
ship and mutual respect. He was so very
proud of all of us for what we achieved
together.
"Every Sunday on the ball field, Denny
felt like a little kid at a carnival, and
being our umpire was the thrilling ride
he never wanted to get off of.
"Denny, old friend, we will miss you
dearly. But your memory will echo for-
ever in our hearts each time we hear the
words, 'Play ball!' Denny, you are now
safe at home ... in God's loving arms:
Steve Achtman of Temple Israel spoke

at Drake Sports Park. Brenner and his
first wife, the late Sandy Brenner, were
close friends with Achtman's parents, the
late Jack and Esther Achtman.
"I'm 54, so Denny knew me since I
was a baby," Achtman said.
Denny's wife, Bernice, and family sug-
gest donations in his memory be made
to Temple Israel or to a charity of one's
choice.
On the field, the 16-team league is
heading into the home stretch of the sea-
son. Temple Shir Shalom (11-0) led the
way through games of Aug. 2. Temple
Israel No. 2 (9-2) and Temple Israel No.
1(9-2) were tied for second place and
Congregation B'nai Moshe (7-3) was in
fourth place.
