He concluded, "Opening Iran up to foreign

unfreezing over $100 billion in assets means
more money for Hamas for building terror
tunnels in Gaza, more weapons for Hezbollah
in Lebanon, more slaughter in Syria and
more violence worldwide:'

Correction

• The display ad for Temple Shir Shalom's
"Food, Fun and Fireworks" celebration (Aug.
6, page 21) gave the wrong day. The correct
day is Monday, Aug. 17. For more informa-
tion on the event, see the ad on page 12 of
this issue, the Arts & Life Editor's Picks on
page 80 and the IN Calendar on page 28.

And, there are far more
Jewish Olympic champions
than you might think.
A prime example is one of the great-
est swimmers of all time, Mark Spitz.
Spitz won two gold medals at the 1968
Summer Olympics in Mexico and
seven gold medals at the 1972 Summer
Olympics in Munich (an Olympics
that was overshadowed by the assas-
sinations of 11 Israeli athletes by PLO
terrorists).
Before he achieved Olympic Gold,
Spitz was already the holder of 10

While competing in the 1969
Maccabiah Games, Spitz won six gold
medals and was named "Outstanding
Athlete of the Games." His record of
winning seven gold medals in a single
Olympics was not surpassed until
Michael Phelps in 2008.

During President Obama's Aug. 5 speech at
American University supporting the Iran
nuclear weapons agreement (JCPOA), he
referred to the previous experiences in the
region, describing them as prime examples
of the law of unintended consequences.
And as Congress debates, using all sorts of
irrelevant excuses to oppose the agreement,
those unintended consequences as a result
of overriding his veto will be that innocent
Israelis will die.
First of all, the arguments about getting a
better deal, the hostages, etc., are moot. Like
it or not, the deal on the table is the only one
in play. There is no better way to preclude
Iran from getting nuclear weapons. Period.
The argument that money will be freed up
to support Israel's enemies is valid, but those
actions are containable as long as nuclear
weapons are not part of the equation. Even
if the agreement contained language about
Iran's support of terrorists, little would actu-
ally result. Iran would continue to do as it

has, using third-party cutouts not traceable
to Iran.
So, why would Israelis die? Simple. The
prime minister's argument against the deal,
any "deal," exists only to give Israel cover to
do what it perceives as needed, including
military attacks with a far lower threshold
that we see as needed to justify an attack. As
long as Iran is in "compliance' Israel loses
the world's support if they attacked the Iran
facilities.
No agreement eventually means a military
escalation to prevent nuclear weapons. And
regardless of the source of the attacks, be it
Israel or us, Israel would be blamed. History
tells us a response from Iran and/or their
proxies is inevitable, causing the loss of inno-
cent lives.
Perhaps the military attacks on Iran would
achieve the goal, at least for a few years. But
the cost would be innocent lives lost on both
sides.
The JCPOA accomplishes all of that for
perpetuity and without the loss of one pre-
cious life. I hope Bibi and the huff-and-puff
Congress eventually understand that.
