Downriver Businessman
H
arold Podolsky, 98, of Palm
Desert, Calif., formerly of
West Bloomfield, died Aug.
2, 2015.
He was deeply loved by
his wife, Shirley. He was a
bachelor of 60 when they
married, and they had a
total of 43 wonderful years
together.
Harold was a giving and
generous man of great
Harold
stature who had the capac-
Podolsky
ity to listen and who cared
deeply for family and friends. He gave
back to the community where he lived
in his growing years, having graduated
high school in Wyandotte and then gone
on to graduate from the University of
Michigan, where he was a big fan of the
football team, even hiring some of the
players to work for him during their
summer vacation.
He was on the board of the
Wyandotte Savings Bank and on the
committee that eventually sold the
bank to J.P. Morgan. He was president
of the Wyandotte Rotary and received
a diamond pin for never having missed
a meeting. He was president of the
downriver Chamber of Commerce. The
Podolsky boys, Harold and Seymour,
were highly thought of downriver by
everyone and gave back to their com-
munity, each in his own way.
They owned the Beverage Distribution
Co. in Southgate, also sometimes called
the Family Podolsky, which included
their father, Isadore. They sold Stroh's
beer and had all the downriver territory
including the airport, which at that time
only sold Strolls.
Harold never forgot the dinner that
was given in his honor and the
plaque that said he was the greatest
boss and was loved by his workers.
He served his country during
World War II as a lieutenant in the
Air Force. While in this country, he
wrote sports for the base newspa-
per and sent articles to the home
newspapers of the boys on base. He
also served in the Intelligence Unit
while in England.
He was a mentor to his nieces and
nephews and stepchildren, always with
an open ear.
Mr. Podolsky is survived by his
devoted wife, Shirley; his stepchildren,
Patricia Finn, Robert Finn (Lauren),
Steven Finn (Shirley); his grandchildren
and great-grandchildren; his sister-in-
law, Dorothy Podolsky; his niece, Susan
Podolsky; his nephew, Jeffrey Podolsky;
nephews, Jon, David (Roberta) and
Matthew Posner (Miriam); niece,
Rebecca Samberg (Art); other nieces
and nephews and cousins.
He was the dear brother of the late
Seymour and the late Helen Posner.
Interment was at Machpelah
Cemetery. Contributions may be made
