arts & life out to eat Find made-to-order juice and fresh salads at Beyond Juice. Beyond Juice •, A have to confess, or maybe kvetch, that my lunch has been a little lackluster lately. My law firm's office is in 3000 Town Center. It's where we've been for almost 40 years, and so sometimes I find I feel a bit lost in a sea of monotonous fast-food chains — Chipotle, Potbelly, Jimmy John's, Tim Hortons — it's not exactly an epicurean powerhouse. I'm not on the more spoiled side of the 696/ Lodge mixing bowl, where you'll find Bacco and Biga and Leo's and Little Daddy's and Plaza Deli scat- tered amongst the dozens of restau- rants at every corner. No, instead, I'm forced to suffer with the choice of either a high-sodium, high-calorie, high-cholesterol lunch; a candy bar or bag of chips from the sundry shop in the lobby of my build- ing; or, if I'm really lucky, and had the time to go shopping — a yogurt and a Clif bar scrounged out of my pantry. But finally, there's an oasis in the food desert of Civic Center Drive — the new Beyond Juice Detroit on Evergreen, just south of 11 Mile. The juice bar and cafe-style restaurant is a Birmingham import, a concept that has certainly thrived on Maple just west of Old Woodward by offering healthy, fresh food along with diet-conscious juices and smoothies. It's exactly the kind of upgrade the panoply of tower- ing high-rise office buildings packed with thousands of workers needed. These nutrition-starved workers can now opt for a quinoa bowl instead of a bowl of Wendy's chili. A build-your- own salad with a base of garden-fresh kale, spinach or romaine instead of McDonald's Bacon Ranch Salad with Crispy Chicken. I've found I'm torn between two per- sonal favorites — their avocado turkey wrap, packed with avocado, hummus, romaine, Muenster and delicious, juicy cherry tomatoes, or their cilantro chicken wrap, with roasted tomatoes, avocado and a homemade spicy cilan- tro sauce that's out of this world. Either comes on your choice of a spinach, wheat or gluten-free wrap, but you won't find a slice of bread in the place. The Southfield location's lease doesn't allow the sale of traditional sandwiches on their amazing eight-grain bread you'll find in Birmingham so as to avoid competition with its corporate chain neighbors. To appeal to the breakfast crowd tired of Egg McMuffins, they offer egg white wraps — either build your own or choose from their "original" with tomatoes, cheddar and avocado, or the kicked-up Spanish- style Fuego Huevo with the aforementioned spicy cilantro sauce I find myself dreaming of almost every day by 10:30 or so. If you'd rather stick to a liquid lunch, but weren't blessed with Don Draper's liver, they have a selection of dozens of delicious smoothies and juices packed with healthy and fresh ingredients you wouldn't find anywhere else but at home with a Vitamix after a very expensive trip to Whole Foods. Dieters or workout buffs searching for flax seed and whey and chia and granola need look no further. The Southfield location also offers the same prepared grab-and-go juice cleanses you'll find in the Birmingham location, and parking is certainly a lot easier if you find yourself scrambling to punch the clock in time. While I'm typically the grab-and- go type, running back to my office to return phone calls or emails between bites, I have to compliment the Beyond Juice team for building a beautiful dine-in setting. A mix of wood and metal give it a modern industrial feel befitting the neighborhood, and certainly for a quick power lunch with an important client, it's an opportunity to show off your appreciation for clean eating without keeping your boss wait- ing two hours for you to get back to work. Like the Birmingham location, Beyond Juice James Franco Detroit in Southfield will soon offer delivery to neighboring buildings, making my life and the life of many others, I'm sure, that much easier. All I can say is, welcome to the neighborhood. It's a long time com- ing. The Limited Edition Townhouse Kobe Wagyu Burger. Champion of Burger Brawl Detroit 2012 "Detroit's Best Burger." While Rocco wasn't himself Jewish, he played one of cinema's most notorious Jews, The Godfather's Moe Greene. The Townhouse Detroit, at the cor- ner of Woodward and Congress in Downtown Detroit, is officially open. The 314-seat restaurant's design is extravagant, featuring two bars, a sushi station, a huge open kitchen, leather- covered seating, a plush whiskey lounge and a glass-enclosed house with a retractable pitched roof. The Detroit location is larger than the Birmingham locale with a more diverse menu, including sushi and other raw bar items. Two of its signature dishes — the design-your-own salad bowl and its $19, 10-ounce aged prime hand-pattied hamburgers — are available Downtown, as is a design-your-own-burger option starting at $14. Guests can grab a bite to eat from the rolling dim sum cart that has a selection of small, inexpensive dishes that change weekly. Reservations are strongly recommend- ed. Hours are Mon Fri: 11 a.m.-2 a.m. Sat & Sun: 9 a.m.-2 am. (313) 792-5241 or info@townhousebistro.com .
