AT THE MOVIES
Opening this week: The Stanford
Prison Experiment is based on a real
1971 psychology experiment in which
a small group of students played
prisoners and guards among a
larger group of real ones under the
supervision of Stanford professor
Philip Zimbardo. Billy Crudup plays
Zimbardo, with Olivia Thirlby, 28,
playing Christine Maslach Zimbardo,
currently a psychology professor.
When she was a grad student, Ms.
Zimbardo persuaded her husband to
stop the experiment early because
brutality had occurred. The brutal-
ity of the "guards"
led to a "prisoner"
revolt, led by stu-
dent Daniel Culp,
played by Ezra
Miller, 22, who has
been singled out
by critics for his
performance. Also
Miller
56. The first, Eli: Inspiring
Future Generations, was pro-
duced by Detroit-based Allyson
Rockwell, and tells the story
of Holocaust survivor Eliezar
Ayalon (shown), whose mother
sent him away from the Polish
ghetto with a cup of honey,
telling him to spread hope
into the lives of others. At 8
p.m., Andrew Goldberg's new
documentary Jewish Journey:
America, which covers
five centuries of stories
of why Jews left their
Old Worlds for America
and how they got here.
And at 9:30 p.m., in
the fifth episode of The
Story of the Jews with
Simon Schama, the
historian explores how
the Holocaust and the
creation of Israel have
changed what it means
to be Jewish. Dptv.org .
FUNNY STUFF
Saturday Night Live alumni Tim
Meadows and Horatio Sanz will
be joined by members of the 313
(former Second City Detroiters
living in Los Angeles) Kevin Dorff,
appearing is Farmington Hills-native
James Wolk, 30, as Mike Penney, a
student posing as a guard.
Ricki and the Flash stars Meryl
Streep as Ricki, a rock singer who
chased her dreams and, along
the way, abandoned her family.
Ricki has a last chance to mend
fences when her ex-husband, Pete
(Kevin Kline) asks her to visit
Chicago and help their estranged
and troubled daughter (played by
Mamie Gummer, Streep's real-life
daughter). Longtime character actor
Charlotte Rae (Mrs. Garrett on TV's
Facts of Life and real-life aunt of
JN Story Development Editor Keri
Guten Cohen) plays Oma in the film.
There's a lot of music in the film and
here's hoping that Ben Platt, 21,
who plays a bartender at the tavern
where Ricki often performs, gets
to show off the singing chops he
showed in the Pitch Perfect movies.
Fantastic Four is a re-boot of the
Fantastic movie franchise, featur-
ing a whole new cast. The film was
directed and co-written by Josh
Trank, 31, whose first feature film,
the critically acclaimed sci-fi thriller
