Oak Park JCC exercisers weigh in on
their alternatives come Aug. 31.

Louis Finkelman
Special to the Jewish News

F

first came the news that
the Jimmy Prentis Jewish
Community Center in Oak
Park would close in the spring. Then
the closing was postponed until Aug.
31. This was followed by uncer-
tainty when the Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit issued a
request for proposals for future use
of the building. Maybe the new oper-
ator would provide some of the same
amenities, maybe not.
A major unknown centers on the
JCC's fitness facilities. Those who
currently exercise at the Oak Park
JCC are trying to figure out alterna-
tives.
Some of these
JCC members have
worked out there
for decades and
have strong feelings
about the facility.
Ricky Kaczander of
Ricky
Huntington Woods,
Kaczander
for example, inher-
ited a connection to
the JCC: His father worked at Detroit
JCCs for 50 years. Kaczander comes
to the Oak Park JCC five times a
week to run on the treadmill and
then enjoy the steamroom and the
whirlpool.
Paul Levine, mayor pro tern of
Oak Park, comes
to the JCC three
times a week for
cardio workouts
and weight training,
continuing his rec-
ommended physical
/ 444 therapy.
John Klein of Oak
John Klein

Park comes to the JCC four times a
week, alternating between the row-
ing machine and swimming.
Ruslan Shamayev has been at the
JCC since he was 10, when his fam-
ily moved here from Russia 14 years
ago. He likes work-
ing out and playing
ball there. It's the
place where he has
met some of his
best friends.
Iry Fishman exer-
cises elsewhere and
comes to the Oak
Iry Fishman
Park JCC for the
executive treatment:
the steam room and the whirlpool.

Social Amenities

Other members agree that the social
atmosphere explains why they exer-
cise at the JCC.
Glenn Lapin says, "I know almost
everyone there —
Orthodox, Reform,
African American,
Russian and oth-
ers. It is the only
community gather-
ing spot where such
a diverse group
can interact. This
Glenn Lapin
Jewish community
will not be the same
without the JPM JCC. I believe the
JCC and Jewish Federation will soon
regret its decision:'
Another regular, a "low-profile
guy" who wants to remain anony-
mous, says he has been working
out at the JCC for seven or eight
years. He thinks "keeping the center
open should be priority No. 1. Look
