A JCC member in the exercise room

around the center;' he says, "there
are three buildings, mostly of older
people. Where are they going to go?"
Rabbi David and Alicia Nelson of
Oak Park are among the most fre-
quent users.
"We are at the
JCC six days a
week," they say.
"We swim five
days a week in the
6:30 a.m. class and
always enjoy the
fact that the lanes
are very crowded. If
Alicia and
our grandchildren
Rabbi David
are visiting, we can
Nelson
always walk over
on Shabbat afternoon and enjoy the
pool:'
They also do a stretch class and
yoga. Although they have a member-
ship at a for-profit health club, they
like the convenience and friendships
they have at the Oak Park JCC.
What will they do when the exer-
cise room closes Aug. 31?
Kaczander probably will get a
treadmill for his basement at home.
Klein has similar plans — a rowing
machine for the basement — but, he
says, "It won't be the same. It is not
just the exercise. I come here for the
social interaction, for the people."

If forced to find another venue for
exercise, Levine says, "I will drop
my JCC membership and choose an
option in the area nearby that meets
my therapeutic needs. I like support-
ing community and nonprofit insti

tutions. I will not drive 25 minutes
each way to the West Bloomfield JCC
to exercise for 40 or 50 minutes.
"Very sadly, we'll have to look
for another location to exercise.
The great tragedy is that this com-
munity has invested so much time,
energy and resources into the Ten
Mile Road JCC and now a 'financial
report' makes it acceptable to walk
away from the thousands of dollars
invested to build a pool, to create a
playground and to establish a real
community connection across a very
diverse Jewish community:'
Lapin says he will find another
health club nearby.
"I do know that I will not support
the JCC or Jewish Federation unless
I am confident that both organiza-
tions realign their priorities to fit the
needs of the local Jewish commu-
nity. They are walking away from a
vibrant, growing and diverse Jewish
community. I never thought I would
believe that, but that is exactly how I
feel now."
On the other hand, Martin
Lowenberg of Southfield does not
want to answer any questions about
what he will do when the gym closes
because he does not think the gym
will close.
"It is too important to the com-
munity," he says. "They will come up
with some plan to keep it open."
Iry Fishman agrees with
Lowenberg. He believes Federation
will accept a proposal that keeps the
facility functioning as part of the
Jewish community and might even
keep the exercise room open
