Holocaust Center To Host
Kindertransport Conference
The Holocaust Memorial Center
in Farmington Hills will host the
2015 Kindertransport Association
Conference on Oct. 9-11.
Between the years of 1938-39, nearly
10,000 Jewish children were trans-
ported from Nazi-occupied Europe to
Great Britain in what became known
as the Kindertransport. The Holocaust
Memorial Center counts two "Kinder"
among its most active supporters.
Kindertransport survivors, their
children and grandchildren are invited
to this inspiring conference as well as
the general public. Attendees will have
opportunities to meet Kindertransport
survivors and their descendants, and
tour the museum and archives, which
include a permanent exhibit of three
Kindertransport Memory quilts and
important Kindertransport artifacts.
The conference begins on Friday,
Oct. 9, with dinner and ends Sunday,
Oct. 11, after lunch and a closing pre-
sentation. Registration includes two
breakfasts, two lunches, two dinners
and a free shuttle from the hotel to
museum.

Tickets to a performance of Mona
Golabek's play, The Pianist of Willesden
Lane, at 2 p.m. Oct. 11 at the Berman
Center for the Performing Arts will be
made available to attendees.
Register at kindertransport.org/
conference.aspx. Special-rate lodg-
ing is available at the Westin Hotel
in Southfield. For information, call
Rebecca Steiner at (248) 536-9601 or
email ktaconference@gmail.com .

Another Student Admits
To Ski Resort Vandalism
The Associated Press reports that Jesse
Krumholz, 22, a member of the for-
mer Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity at the
University of Michigan in Ann Arbor
has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor
charge regarding malicious destruc-
tion of a building last Jan. 17-18 at
the Treetops ski resort in northern
Michigan. He is the second Sammy
member to admit to the offense.
According to the Michigan Daily and
television stations WPBN and WWTV,
sentencing will be held Sept. 17. In
addition, two other Sammy members
face charges of letting minors use
drugs and alcohol and are due in court
on Aug. 13.

Israel To Streamline
Army Personnel, Costs
JNS.org Starting this month, men
drafted into the Israel Defense Forces
(IDF) will serve 32 months in the
military, down from the current 36
months.
The decision to cut the length of
compulsory military service for new
recruits is part of an ongoing effort
to streamline the IDF and cut costs.
According to IDF projections, the
shorter term of service could see the
military's total number of soldiers
drop by 6,000 in 2019 (including some
2,500 fewer in combat units).
At present, the IDF does not expect
to disband any units nor is it planning
to use its reserve forces to compensate
for lost manpower.
To adjust for the expected decline in
the number of combat troops, the IDF
plans to shorten training periods. IDF
Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot
could choose to cut the training sched-
ule by two months across the board
for all combat units, resulting in an
average training period of six months.
This would force the IDF to have four,
rather than the current three, enlist-
ment intakes per year.
Alternatively, the IDF could gradu-
ally cut back training periods on a
unit-by-unit basis. Under the second
approach, guard duty and other non-
essential activity would be gradually
reduced, making sure troops get the
necessary expertise despite reduced
training time.
