-Cycle, the Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan's annual
bicycle tour of historic Jewish
Detroit, will head west this year. On
Sunday, Aug. 16, some 225 Metro
Detroiters will roll through Southwest
Detroit, Historic Fort Wayne,
Woodmere Cemetery and Corktown to
learn about the the area's history and
renaissance.
The event is in its fifth year and has
become a summer tradition for many.
This year's new route features eight
docent-narrated stops. From a new
starting point of West Riverfront Park,
located on Jefferson along the Detroit
River, riders will travel to Southwest
Detroit and visit the Repair the World
House and Clark Park, and then to
Historic Fort Wayne.
There, docents will share the tale of
this important Detroit icon — 96 acres
set aside in the earliest days of the city
to defend Detroit against its enemies,
yet the fort never saw a single shot
fired from its grounds. Instead, Fort
Wayne served as an embarkation point
for men and women, including many
Jewish people, going off to the armed
forces beginning in the Civil War and
continuing until 1973.
Today, Fort Wayne is a public park
and historic site and is home to the
warehouse of the Detroit Historical
Society.
Riders will also visit the large Jewish

burial section of Woodmere Cemetery,
one of the city's oldest cemeteries
and where illustrious Jewish leaders
are interred such as Benjamin Siegel,
founder of B. Siegel and Company, and
tobacco baron Sigmund Rothschild.
Other stops include the Alley
Project, Roosevelt Park (Michigan
Depot) and Corktown. As always,
the ride concludes with a Picnic-
in-the-Park, this year featuring a
Southwestern Kosher Food Cart, cour-
tesy of Dish Kosher Catering.
J-Cycle is a bicycle tour designed to
celebrate the exciting developments
happening in and around Detroit and
to explore the city's Jewish history in
an up-close and personal way.
The event is co-sponsored by the
Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue,
the Reconstructionist Congregation of
Detroit and Hillel of Metro Detroit.
Other sponsors whose contribu-
tions help make this event possible
include MJS Packaging, Culligan Water
Systems, ReBuild Nation, the Hub and
Wheelhouse Detroit. A portion of the
entry fee will go to support the work of
Back Alley Bikes, a nonprofit commu-
nity bike shop.
Registration in advance is required
and is $36 per person ($25 for stu-
dents). Participants must be 16 and
