'Second Thought' Is Needed
About Closing Oak Park JCC
Shimon Peres, when he spoke at the
University of Michigan in 1968, noted
that wartime British leader Winston
Churchill said, "Democracy is the
worst form of government except for
all those other forms that have been
tried from time to time" As a corollary,
Peres pointed out that democracy also
provided the ability to give a "second
thought"
Can the greater Detroit Jewish estab-
lishment role play with its constituency
and be democratic enough to follow
Peres and have a "second thought"
regarding closing the 10 Mile Jewish
Center at the end of August?
Hopefully, thanking them in advance.

their special projects. The corps helps
Metro Detroit synagogues, churches and
nonprofits save time and money by tak-
ing on their tasks of mailing, assembling
packets, wrapping gifts, processing invita-
tions, labeling, stamping and other special
projects. Services are free of charge.
Organizations that make use of the
Senior Service Corps include Gleaners
Community Food Bank, Volunteers
of America, Arts and Scraps, and the
Greening of Detroit World Medical Relief.

are organized and devoted senior adults

meeting new people, they love feeling

'Israel In The D' Has Vital
Information On Facebook
The Jewish Community Relations Council
of Metropolitan Detroit has created "Israel
in the V' a Facebook page dedicated to
providing vital information to local Israel
activists and supporters.
In addition to sharing information
about upcoming local Israel-themed
above the article "The NY Times Double
Standard" (July 9, page 32)?
The first article describes how the
Palestinian Authority sways public
opinion and brainwashes its youth by
blaming Jews for "all the world's ills" ...
just like the Nazis.
The second article condemns the
New York Times for its "inexplicable
and unconscionable" condemna-
tion of Israel when civilian casualties
occur in defense of its country while it
accepts the actions of Hamas when it
kills Israeli men, women and children
because Hamas is not "morally equiva-
lent"
Both articles describe how Israel
and Jews alike are responsible for the
world's problems.
Unfortunately, I do not find any of
this revealing or shocking. The same
lies have been told for millennia. The
sad fact is that uninformed people will
always be swayed by inaccuracies and
lies.

Update
• "Near The End" (July 9, page 1)
reported on the Michigan legislature's
vote to end incentives for the state's
film industry. Gov. Rick Snyder signed
the bill on July 10. According to the
new law, no funding for any new film
projects will be permitted. However,
$25 million has been allocated for the
fiscal year beginning this Oct. 1 to sat-
isfy previous commitments.
IT IS TIME TO ACT!
I'm approaching
or crossed 60, is
there anything I
need to know?
Yes - remember, you're still
young - as long as you believe
.1 it! Speaking from experience,
- there is a certain "OMG, I'm
60" trauma that ensues. There is a lot to
learn. Social Security is coming. Should
you take the money at 62, 66 or wait until
70? How does it work with my spouse and
what happens if divorced or widowed,
what are the rules? Medicare begins at 65
and you need to learn about Parts A-D. If
parents are still living - you need to learn
the options available for nursing care
and attendance benefits in case the need
arises. Nursing homes run $10,000 per
month and will usurp what is left of the
estate unless you plan. You need to make
sure your estate plan is in order.

'British Schindler' Is Better

The comparison of Nicholas Winton to

Schindler had an ulterior motive by
saving people who were working for
