who has driven to nearly 10 shows a
year for decades. "The art shows give
me a vacation from my studio and
the opportunity to meet artists and
patrons:'
Arleen Parker likes working with
glass because it has so many properties
and can be melted, molded and cut.
She also enjoys making lampwork glass
beads, shaped over a small flame and
enhanced with coloring techniques.
The Parkers began making jewelry
as their line of work after retiring from
the insurance business 15 years ago,
when their four children were grown.
"I was an art major at the University
of Cincinnati:' recalls Arleen, who has
returned to an early interest through
the couple's Serendipity Studio and
Gallery. "I work because of passion for
the art and stay away from commercial
styles. I try to make each piece excit-
ing.
"I learned about stained glass from a
girlfriend and worked on windows and
doors before going into smaller pieces
and jewelry.

"My husband learned by trial and
error after I showed him what I needed
to make clasps. We both had private
lessons on lampwork."
The Parkers think of stained glass
jewelry as a unique art form, and they
ask viewers to visualize a stained glass
window that has been reduced to a
wearable piece of art.
They describe each Serendipity piece
as exhibiting its own personality with
color patterns, shapes and textures and
remind buyers that changes in lighting
may reveal dramatic new shades, depth
and movement.
The Parkers, who drive to fairs with
a travel trailer filled with their work,
allow time to enjoy Michigan's water-
way vacation spots, which they have
come to know well over the years.
"Fairs allow for such a beautiful con-
nection with customers:' says Arleen,
66, who has made many friends in
Michigan and sees them socially — as
well as commercially — during sum-
mer travels.

it's not heavy. He's happy."

to play tennis, but the clerk at
the Kennebunkport Club made it
clear to him that Jews weren't
allowed in ("We have no courts,"
he was told, although the place
was empty). Weintraub's wife told
the story to George Bush, then a
businessman, and the son of Sen.
Prescott Bush of Maine. Not long
after, George invited Jerry to play
at the club with him, his brother
and his father. After their first
match, Sen. Bush told Jerry he
would put him up for membership
– and, given his prestige, Jerry
became a member.
