FICTION
■ In Angels at the Gate (Cappuccino Books), T.K. Thorne imagines the life
of the biblical figure Lot's wife, who turns into a pillar of salt in Genesis.
Unnamed in the text, she is the independent and determined Adira in this
story of ancient times. Thorne, the author of another work of historical
fiction, Noah's Wife, recently retired after serving as the first Jewish female
officer in the Birmingham (Ala.) Police Department.
■In A Reunion of Ghosts (Harper), a novel by Judith Claire Mitchell,
we find a tragic yet funny family history. As the last in a long line of family
members who have killed themselves, the three Alter sisters write the last
of a saga of tragedies that encourage empathy in the telling. Their story,
however, elicits humor as the tales of family history, lore and memories
are woven together.
■Elyce Wakerman's new novel, A Tale of Two Citizens (Yucca), tells the
story of a Jewish immigrant seeking refuge in the U.S. in 1929. All Harry
Himelbaum wants is to live in America and then send for the wife and
child he must deny having — if he were to tell the truth, it would contra-
